NGLA is excited to announce the roll-out of our new and improved volunteer structure. Beginning this fall, all volunteer positions will be classified in one of four different areas: Volunteers, Leadership and Programs, Communications and Assessment, and Partnerships. Each of these areas will be overseen by a Volunteer Manager who will manage individual volunteers on their projects and help to move the strategic plan forward in a more efficient and effective way. This will open up more volunteer opportunities and allow for a number of short-term positions/committees for anyone interested in working on specific projects within a particular timeline. We also plan to roll-out a more comprehensive volunteer training program and volunteer position descriptions to ensure all volunteers understand their scope of work. We are looking forward to redefining the volunteer experience for all members and look forward to hearing your feedback.

Say hello to our new Volunteer Managers:
Kevin Pons
Volunteer Coordinator
Kevin has recently been named the Director of Education & Leadership for Sigma Pi Fraternity where he also acts a Regional Director. Kevin has run registration at the NGLA Annual Meeting for the past few years and can be credited with record braking attendance in 2014.

Rafael Matos
Leadership and Programs Volunteer Manager
Rafael is the Assistant Director of Campus Activities at William Paterson University of New Jersey. He is a member of Pi Beta Sigma Fraternity and has extensive experience with leadership development and training.

Katie Owsianiecki
Communications Volunteer Manager
Katie Owsianiecki is the Community Coordinator for Greek Life
at LaSalle University. Katie is a long-time NGLA volunteer who also volunteers for her national organization, Theta Phi Alpha Sorority.
Susan Zarnowski
Assessment and Partnerships Volunteer Manager
Sue Zarnowski is the Assistant Director of Campus Engagement and Greek Advisor at Bryant University. She has dedicated her time volunteering on a number of different NGLA teams, and is a long-time volunteer for her national organization, Alpha Sigma Alpha.

Following the untimely passing of Phi Sigma Sigma NPC Delegate and longtime NGLA Assistant Executive Director Josette Kaufman, the NGLA Board of Directors chose to memorialize Josette’s innumerable contributions to NGLA and her commitment to collegians with the creation of the Josette Kaufman Award for Health and Wellness Programming.

This award will recognize individual chapters, governing councils or total communities for outstanding programming in an area of great concern to Josette. Programming that will be considered for recognition may be either general educational programming about an existing concern or may address issues from a preventive side. Award areas include, but are not limited to, women’s and men’s health issues, sexual assault, cyber-bullying, and mental health.

This award is not to be confused with current awards presented for risk management and risk reduction; this is for health and wellness education. Applications for the new award will be available November 1st.

NGLA Drive-In Dates and Locations Announced

NGLA is pleased to host two upcoming drive-in conferences this fall. The goal of the drive-in programs is to provide ongoing educational opportunities which support and enhance the programming offered at the annual conference each year. Additional information about the drive-in conferences, as well as registration information, can be found on our website.

Empire State Leadership Summit
The purpose of the Empire State Leadership Summit is to identify common issues facing fraternity/sorority communities in New York and compare and contrast similarities and differences amongst the participating fraternity/sorority communities. Participants will be able to develop proactive, collaborative relationships with other participants to take on collective issues and analyze bystander behavior within their chapters and communities. By attending students should have the skills to apply their new knowledge to create personal goals for the upcoming year and recognize the value of participating in other NGLA initiatives, including the NGLA Annual Conference.

Location: Rochester Institute of Technology
Date: November 14, 2014
Time: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Cost: $30 (NGLA subscriber)/$50 (non-subscriber)
Registration deadline: October 31, 2014

Local Greek Leadership Conference
The Local Greek Leadership Conference is dedicated to building a network among local fraternal organizations. Founded by local greek members, for local greeks, this program addresses common themes on college campuses in the northeast. In most cases, local organizations do not have the pleasure of attending national and regional conferences hosted by national governing bodies. This conference is dedicated to local organizations coming together and learning from one another. As a result of attending this program, participants will create a network among these local organizations in which ideas may be exchanged to strengthen individual organizations beyond the conference, promote relationships between local sororities and fraternities, and gain access to a conference and therefore workshops, networking, and resources.

Location: Kean University (New Jersey)
Date: November 22, 2014
Time: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Cost: $30 (NGLA subscriber)/$50 (non-subscriber)
Registration deadline: November 8, 2014
