The FBI wants you to pay more attention to online security. UWO's new cybersecurity center aims to help you do just that
OSHKOSH NORTHWESTERN

OSHKOSH – If your home was burglarized, University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh information systems professor Michael Patton bets you'd tell people. When it comes to our information being burglarized, though, people are surprisingly quiet.

"If there was someone in your neighborhood breaking into houses, you would tell your neighbors," Patton said. "That's what's happening in the cyberworld, but we don't tell anybody."

He is hoping the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh's new Cybersecurity Center of Excellence, which opened in September, can get people talking. Patton directs the new center with Jerry Eastman, president and founder of Wisconsin Cyber Threat Response Alliance...

Construction ahead of schedule on SOM-designed exhibition hall coming to De Pere

WISCONSIN PUBLIC RADIO

The Mulva Cultural Center in De Pere is entering a new phase of construction, with its footings poured and a tower crane coming to the site in January

It’ll be the first complex of its kind in northeast Wisconsin, said CEO Mike Van Asten. It’s rare for national exhibitions to come to Wisconsin cities other than Milwaukee and Madison, he said.

"There’s a large population in the Fox River Valley up here in northeast Wisconsin, and it’ll be an opportunity for people living in the northern half of the state to experience some of the things that previously they would have had to go to Milwaukee or Chicago or maybe Minneapolis for," Van Asten said

The $95 million facility will host a dozen or more traveling exhibitions each year, and it will feature a movie theater, sculpture gardens, classrooms and a restaurant...

Waupaca farm considers digester; facility could process organic waste
WAUPACA COUNTY NEWS

Ron Brooks has proposed an aerobic digester on his dairy farm in the town of Lind. He spoke to the Waupaca County Highway Committee when it met Thursday, Dec. 16.

Brooks said the project will be built and operated by Vanguard Renewables, based in Wellesley, Massachussetts. Started in 2014, the company has six systems operating in New England, four currently under construction and another 10 planned, according to Vanguard CEO John Hanselman.

Brooks showed the committee a video with Hanselman speaking about Vanguard Renewables’ digester process. “Food waste moves from being a very harmful greenhouse gas to a wonderful tool for decarbonization and regenerative agriculture,” Hanselman said.

Hanselman noted that anaerobic digestion is a means of processing organic matter.

Marinette board approves Rising Phoenix early college program
EAGLE-HERALD

MARINETTE—Students at Marinette High School will have an opportunity to earn a two-year associate’s degree while still in high school starting next year.

During Tuesday’s School Board meeting, Meagan Strehlow talked to the board about UW-Green Bay’s Rising Phoenix program, which began last fall with a cohort of students from Manitowoc Lincoln High School.

“They looked at students who had the aptitude to go to college and excel, but maybe didn’t have the tools to do that,” Strehlow explained. “They were either first-generation college students, students on free or reduced lunch, or generally underserved in some way. As a result, we now have 25 students from that district who are now earning an associate’s degree this May.”..

Green Bay Packaging attains Green Master status for 12th consecutive year
GREEN BAY PACKAGING

GREEN BAY – The Wisconsin Sustainable Business Council has named Green Bay Packaging a Green Master within its Green Masters Program. Recognizing sustainable actions by businesses from across the state of Wisconsin, the Green Masters program works to identify businesses that have taken at least one action within each of the nine pillars of sustainability. Participants in the program receive recognition for their sustainability accomplishments and develop ideas for future sustainability actions.

In 2021, Green Bay Packaging began operation of a new $500 million state-of-the-art paper mill with first-in-industry energy-saving technologies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions per ton paper production and zero direct discharge of water to the Fox River. The project is the first of its size in Wisconsin to reclaim treated water from an adjoining sewerage district...

More utility-scale solar projects went online in 2021 than any other year in Wisconsin
WISCONSIN PUBLIC RADIO

Wisconsin utilities installed and placed into service more solar power in 2021 than any other year as utility-scale solar projects are increasing. The growth of renewable electricity is expected to accelerate as part of efforts to meet carbon reduction goals to stave off the worst effects of climate change.

Around 300 megawatts of utility-scale solar came online in Wisconsin this year, including 150 megawatts of solar as part of the first phase of the Badger Hollow Solar farm in Iowa County. The project is jointly owned by Wisconsin Public Service and Madison Gas and Electric.

WPPI Energy is buying power generated by the 100-megawatt Point Beach Solar project that began operating this fall, and Madison Gas and Electric is now providing energy through its 20-megawatt solar farm in Fitchburg...
