Leadership in the New North
Wisconsin's 48 Most Influential Black Leaders, Part 1 (New North's Timber Smith & Adonica Randall)
MADISON 365

We’ve published our Black Power list every year since our founding — this is our sixth annual — and it’s become the most anticipated thing we do. Every year, I’ve intended this list to highlight the beauty of the diversity across our state. I want kids here in Wisconsin to see role models of people who are succeeding, to know that it’s possible for Black people to achieve great things here.

That’s exactly what our first five lists accomplished, and what we hope to continue with this year’s list.

We can’t pretend, though, that this is just another year. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a dramatic impact on our communities for nearly two years now — our health and our jobs and our financial wellbeing and our education system, and all of these effects are most pronounced in our Black communities. Add to that the brighter-than-ever spotlight on the injustice of systemic racism — it’s been a tough couple years for everybody, but even more so for our Black communities....

This Sheboygan company's six employees saved money from each paycheck to fund a holiday program for disadvantaged kids
SHEBOYGAN PRESS

SHEBOYGAN - Each year around the holidays, the employees of a small Sheboygan company decide where to give money they’ve saved over the year — and it’s no small amount.

Since 2013, Z&N Machines Company has donated $60,000 to local nonprofits.
Through a program set up by the company’s owner, Earl Ney, money for donations comes right out of employees’ paychecks and is matched dollar for dollar by Ney.

This year, the company’s seven employees (including Ney) donated $8,000 to Shop with a Cop after the program positively impacted one employee as a child...

TechGYRLS program gives girls peek into technology fields
PRESS TIMES

GREEN BAY – Eleven-year-olds Brennan Hagedorn and Alex White click, drag and drop pink doohickeys across their screens onto green whatchamacallits.

They’re in a classroom at the YWCA Greater Green Bay, where tiny lights on their round, palm-sized Adafruit circuit boards light up. The girls seem to know what they’re doing – unlike one-third of the adults in the room.

For the day, they’re TechGYRLS, and this is part of the TechGYRLS-S.T.E.A.M. Experience Series.

TechGYRLS is a national YWCA program that gives girls in grades 3-8 a peek at technology fields. S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) is Greater Green Bay’s addition to the national program...

Free accelerator program helping minority, women and veteran-owned startups
WBAY

GREEN BAY - The Blueprint Green Bay is a free, 12-week accelerator program with the Greater Green Bay Chamber aimed to help minorities, women and veterans hoping to start a business in northeast Wisconsin.

The program selects six businesses to help with technology training, creative marketing techniques and grant funding. After the 12 weeks, business owners have a pitch night in front of the program’s sponsors and local entrepreneurs.

Nicole Tilot is the owner of AppEase, an online business that streamlines the underwriting process for life disability and long term care insurance applications. Tilot was part of the first cohort with the program that started in the Fall. She now uses a space called Urban Hub in Green Bay downtown that’s also a part of the Chamber to work on her business...

Mayor Genrich campaigned on broadening diversity, environmental stewardship in Green Bay. Meet the two new employees making that happen
GREEN BAY PRESS GAZETTE

GREEN BAY - Before he was elected mayor, Eric Genrich campaigned in 2018 to create new positions that embrace the city's growing diversity and mitigate the decades of industrial harm riddling the city's critical natural landscape.

"When I spoke with voters, I learned we needed to be more intentional about this work," Genrich told the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "We needed professional staff to integrate all these efforts into the city as a whole."

Once elected, Genrich got to work creating new positions. This year, several of those new hires joined the city staff, allowing Genrich to keep his campaign promise and push his agenda forward...
