DOOR COUNTY - A gigantic cherry, lots of people getting cold and wet, and a parade are among the ways Door County is helping residents and visitors say goodbye to 2022 and welcome 2023.

As always, the Peninsula plays host to a number of unique and special events, indoors and out, both Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 as well as during the week between Christmas and New Year's Day.

Big Cheese Drop in Plymouth one of the quirkiest New Year's Eve traditions in the U.S.

SHEBOYGAN - The annual Sartori Big Cheese Drop at Plymouth Arts Center, 520 E. Mill St., is nationally lauded as one of the country’s quirkiest New Year’s Eve traditions.

This year marks the 16th annual event as the community celebrates Plymouth as the official “Cheese Capital of the World.”

The big cheese is held high by the Plymouth Fire Department's ladder truck before the Plymouth Arts Center's 15th annual Sartori Big Cheese Drop Dec. 31, 2021, in Plymouth, Wisconsin.

The event has drawn thousands of people in past years. The event is marked by a countdown and the lowering of a giant wedge of Sartori’s world award-winning BellaVitano Gold Cheese at 10 p.m....

Holiday-Themed COVID-19 Bivalent Booster Vaccination Event Brings Open Enrollment Access and Holiday Cheer for Children to Oshkosh

OSHKOSH -- On Wednesday, Dec. 21, Multicultural Coalition, Inc. (MCI) will hold a free COVID-19 bivalent booster vaccination event for those 12-years-old and up who have received their primary COVID-19 vaccination series. Additionally, ahead of the holiday season, those who attend the event can receive a free plush animal from Partnership Community Health Center, courtesy of PetSmart in Grand Chute.

Families and individuals attending this holiday-themed vaccination event can learn about health insurance enrollment in Wisconsin and can even speak with a marketplace navigator about how to get signed up. Health insurance enrollment runs until January 15, 2023 and allows people to enroll in high-quality health plans that are part of the federal marketplace....

'Touchdowns for Hunger' brings in $24,000 for Green Bay food pantry so far this season

GREEN BAY -- The shelves at a Green Bay food pantry will be a bit fuller after receiving a check from the Green Bay Packers and Sargento Foods.

Paul's Pantry received a $24,000 donation Tuesday as part of the Packers' and Sargento's Touchdowns for Hunger program. Hunger Task Force in Milwaukee will also be receiving a check as part of the program.

Touchdowns for Hunger, which donates $2,000 to end hunger for every touchdown scored by the green and gold, has been helping the community for 20 years. During those 20 years, the organizations have raised more than $1.7 million, and Paul's Pantry alone has received $450,000.…

NEW Zoo & Adventure Park expanding giraffe, snow leopard exhibits with 2 construction projects in new year

SUAMICO − Two new exhibit expansions at NEW Zoo & Adventure Park could help pave the way for baby snow leopards and a small herd of giraffes in the future.

The building that is home to the zoo’s two snow leopards will be replaced with a new 912-square-foot building, and an adjoining outdoor area with a rock formation will be double the size. An expansion to the giraffe exhibit building will include 3,640 square feet of indoor exercise space for the zoo’s two reticulated giraffes during cold weather and overnight hours.

Both projects will allow the zoo to welcome more animals to each exhibit....

Door County Candle Company sends first shipment of 'light' to Ukraine

STURGEON BAY -- A shipment of candles from Door County is off to make a difference in war-torn Ukraine.

On Wednesday, Door County Candle Company packed up more than 2,000 tin candles to be sent to the people of Ukraine.

Earlier this year, the company began selling a special edition vanilla-scented candle as a way to raise money to help Ukrainians.

During the holiday shopping season, for every special edition candle sold, Door County Candle Company pledged to send a tin candle to Ukraine...

Appleton provides $600,000 to support condominium project on former Foremost Farms property
APPLETON POST-CRESCENT

APPLETON - The city will provide up to $600,000 in public assistance to support the construction of an eight-unit townhouse condominium project in the 900 block of East John Street.

The project, called Eagle Ridge, is the third and final phase of the redevelopment of the former Foremost Farms USA whey plant along the Fox River.

The first phase brought the 99-unit Eagle Point Senior Living with an assessed value of $15 million. The second phase brought the 28-unit Eagle Court Memory Care with an assessed value of $5 million...

SHEBOYGAN COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORP (SCEDC)

SHEBOYGAN — The Sheboygan County Economic Development Corporation (SCEDC) aims to provide a wide variety of services, resources, and expertise to help encourage entrepreneurial opportunities in Sheboygan County. This week saw the launch of the Sheboygan County Accelerator for Learning Entrepreneurship (SCALE), a new accelerator program in partnership with Lakeland University and sponsored by the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC).

SCALE invests in up to six pre or early-revenue startups per cohort, per year. This program is free to the selected applicants and each applicant will receive a technical assistance grant for a total of $10,000. $5,000 will be available for distribution after the first week of the program, and the remainder of $5,000 will become available upon completion of the 10-week course schedule...
