Pizza, Panda Express and homeless shelters: Here are the top Oshkosh business stories of 2022
OSHKOSH NORTHWESTERN

OSHKOSH – There is never any shortage of business news in Oshkosh, but new chains coming to the area and even the potential of flying electric vehicles seemed to pique readers' interest in 2022.

The most-read stories this year also, sadly, included the closing of popular businesses — though at least a dart bar has plans in the works to return under a new name and renovations in early 2023. Notably, efforts by two local nonprofits to find housing solutions for the city's homeless population also made the list....

Fond du Lac focusing on strengthening Main Street
NBC 26

FOND DU LAC — Two years ago, Lawrence Foster identified an obstacle in downtown Fond du Lac.

“I really started digging into what were some of the issues with our downtown,” Foster said. “It really got me thinking of, 'Okay, it’s a little bit stagnant. How can we take this a step further?'”

Foster now co-owns Gathered Roots on Main Street in downtown Fond du Lac. Gathered Roots sells items from local Fond du Lac area vendors....

Need a hot meal? Warm clothing? A big hug? Green Bay's 'Granny' leads with her heart.
GREEN BAY PRESS GAZETTE

GREEN BAY − Her real name is Yvonne Lawson, but if you asked anybody at Green Bay's best known Black resource center for "Yvonne," few would know who you meant.

She goes by Granny, and for good reason. The comforts that come with such a title — home-cooked meals, hospitality and warmth, a dose of real talk — fit Lawson. Ask her how she's doing and she'll tell you she's blessed. Show gratitude for her level of generosity and she'll shrug and tell you she's doing God's work.

"When people come around, I just become their grandmama. I feed them, I ask them, 'Do you need anything, Honey?' And then I do what I can for them," Lawson said. "Everyone calls me Granny. Every one person. I do so much, so they just gave me the name."...

WLUK

NEENAH -- The J.J. Keller Foundation is marking a milestone.

The foundation, which began in 1991 with a $20 grant to the American Cancer Society, is celebrating $75 million in giving.

Recently, the foundation surprised Catalpa Health with a $75,000 grant to help children and families improve their mental health and well-being.

“We’re on a mission to get at the root causes of these issues and make a difference in the lives of individuals and in our community as a whole,” said Bob Keller, chairman of the J. J. Keller Foundation board. “Mom was instrumental in rallying the partners that would initiate Catalpa Health. She would be happy to see how far they’ve come, serving so many families in our area.”...

Manitowoc, with rich shipbuilding history, only city in state designated a WWII Heritage City
MANITOWOC HERALD TIMES REPORTER

MANITOWOC - Manitowoc recently earned designation as the state's only American World War II Heritage City.

Manitowoc received the designation because of its substantial involvement in World War II.  Most notably was its production of 28 Gato Class Submarines by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company.

Per the John D. Dingell Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act of 2019, there can only be one city, township or municipality per state that can receive the designation. That means no other location in Wisconsin can receive the designation, since Manitowoc has claimed the only designation available for the state....

Making snow at Ariens Nordic Center near Brillion
WLUK

CALUMET COUNTY -- The Ariens Nordic Center, southeast of Brillion, is busy making snow.

Workers at the park are preparing for cross country skiing season and their grand opening next month.

Atop a small hill at the 200-acre site, one of 14 snow making machines is working overtime. "Mother Nature hasn't been real kind to us. The conditions have not been good. A lot of rain. We need temperatures in the mid-20s and lower, and humidity low in order for us to really make decent snow," said Sean Becker, Ariens Nordic Center General Manager...
