As a student at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Marissa Michalkiewicz was known for wandering around campus and the surrounding area with her roommate. Their target was trash, and to Michalkiewicz’s dismay, they found all sorts of recyclable items that had been wrongly discarded.

“By the time I would get halfway around a building picking up stuff, I would say to my friend, ‘I just wish someone would give a damn.’ It became a joke and I was referred to as a ‘giveadamner.’ When it came time to name an LLC, I thought about what I wanted it to look like and knew I wanted it to be a business that gave a damn,” Michalkiewicz said....


UWO Fox Cities student wins business pitch contest, hopes CloudWorld will wow Chinese market

Yingtong Qui, a student at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh’s Fox Cities campus, is savoring his first place finish in the recent 2021 Elevator Pitch Contest hosted by the Alta Resources Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

Qui, with his CloudWorld online platform, topped a group of 11 students who pitched their business ideas in 90 seconds to a panel of alumni judges. He is a freshman student from ChangZhou City, JiangSu Province, China, who said he was thinking about his idea for only a couple of months—a social media platform that builds a connection between businesses seeking employees and job-seekers...

Accelerate Sheboygan County selects 2021 first- and second-place winners
WIS BUSINESS 

SHEBOYGAN COUNTY – Accelerate Sheboygan County is an annual program that assists entrepreneurs and innovators in taking their ideas, products, or existing businesses to the next level. On Wednesday, November 17th, five finalists pitched their ideas to a panel of professional judges.

Accelerate Sheboygan County has selected Benjamin Leibham from Sheboygan, WI as the 2021 business challenge first place winner. Leibham received the $10,000 grand prize as well as a $1,000 technical assistance grant for finishing in the top five to put towards his business, Alto Gear. Sarah Harmeling of Waldo, WI, came in second place and received a $1,000 technical support grant for placing in the top five, as well as an additional $500 for her business, Homeschool Art Box....


Growing industrial control systems company sets up shop in Pulaski

PULASKI – Tom and Steve Giese started producing industrial control systems in a Suamico garage just over three years ago.

“After one winter in unheated space, it was apparent we needed a home,” Tom Giese said.

The received a recommendation to check into the Startup Hub adjacent to Northeast Wisconsin Technical College. By June, their Gain Control LLC had moved into a 1,000-square-foot bay in June 2019, allowing them to take advantage of a loading dock, forklift and other amenities, as well as hire engineering and electrical students from NWTC and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay part-time...

MADISON – The 19th annual Wisconsin Governor’s Business Plan Contest is accepting entries online for the 2022 competition through 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, 2022.

New this year: The third round of the contest will accept narrated “pitch decks” from those finalists who advance beyond the written executive summary round.

MANITOWOC — Access to good food with dignity - that’s what local non-profit Grow it Forward works to provide in Manitowoc county. The organization's mission is to fight food insecurity by providing healthy food options for the community. Now, the non-profit is opening a café that will do just that.
