Mercury Marine turning Fond du Lac distribution center into manufacturing space

FOND DU LAC -- Mercury Marine announced big changes to its Fond Du Lac plant Monday, revealing it will be expanding and converting the space from distributions to manufacturing.

The company plans to move its distributions center to a new 512,000 square foot facility near Indianapolis, Indiana. They say the new space is in a strategic location that will improve delivery and service to Mercury’s global customers while adding much-needed capacity for scale, stability, and reduced logistics costs.

“The Marine industry this year is, has grown exponentially, certainly over the past 20 or so months after COVID and with us at Mercury Marine and Fond du Lac, we are at a place right now where we need to continue to expand,” Lee Gordon, the Communication Director for Mercury Marine said....

So, does offering engineering and design advice that improves machinability and cost per part. The secret to its success? Fostering apprentices to ensure a steady supply of journeymen machinists.

“Out of our current 23 employees, we have 12 journeymen and two apprentices, which is unusual in our industry because a highly skilled workforce is hard to find,” says company president Julie Hoban. “There’s no way that we could compete at such a high level without this talent pipeline. Even with the addition of our first robot for CNC load/unload activity, we still need skilled technicians to operate our manufacturing equipment.”...

PLYMOUTH — Lakeland University has launched a new program with local employers that helps young people train in manufacturing careers.

Lakeland's Learn & Earn program is designed for upcoming or recent high school graduates who may want to earn a four-year degree, but due to a variety of reasons they have decided to enter the local workforce and not continue their education.

The program allows new members at partner companies to complete a full year of college while beginning their career at a company invested in their success. The three initial partner companies are Sargento, Masters Gallery Foods and Johnsonville, LLC...
