GREEN BAY PRESS GAZETTE

GREEN BAY − As winter approaches, farmers markets are moving indoors.

Both the west and east side of the city have their own, which helps businesses stay productive during the cold season and offers something to do for residents.

While downtown's market is well-known and has about 50 to 80 vendors, another one on the west side of the city is growing.

"We don't get much attention, but we are here," said Leah Weycker, Military Avenue Business Improvement District executive director. "This year we have a bigger space and we expect more people.....

Three sisters go from vacationing together to saving abandoned pets, so they started Green Bay Animal Rescue
GREEN BAY PRESS GAZETTE

GREEN BAY -- Vacations at the family cottage in Crandon led to the start of a business for three Green Bay-area sisters.

While in Crandon, Kathy De Champs, Julie Cieslewicz and Lori Buresh set aside some of their relaxation time to volunteer at the Forest County Humane Society. They walked dogs and helped with fundraisers.

“We would go there, grab a leash, and take the dogs for a walk,” De Champs said. “As we did that, we developed an interest in the welfare of animals and the stress they can be under in shelters.”...

Investors striving to improve diversity in startup space
WIS BUSINESS

Investors in the Midwest and nationwide are striving to improve diversity and inclusion among startups and those who help fund them.

Kelli Jones, co-founder and general partner for Sixty8 Capital in Indianapolis, yesterday discussed these efforts during the Wisconsin Technology Council’s Early Stage Symposium in Madison. This seed-stage fund focuses on diverse tech startup companies.

“I think the more and more we can support the grassroots organizations, the people on the ground that are already serving these communities and deploy more capital into those places, I think we’ll start to see a really large amount of growth in the number of funders, in the number of new entrepreneurs, and also in the number of potentially new venture capital funds,” Jones said. Labor of love: How corn brings culture and community together in Oneida
NBC 26

ONEIDA — Corn is more than a side dish for the Oneida Nation members. It cultivates a culture and community identity.

That's why Laura Manthe and Lea Zeise started a white corn co-op, Ohelaku. The meaning of Ohelaku is "among the corn stalks," and the goal is to keep cultural traditions alive and bellies full.

"We're growing food to feed our community, but we're also reconnecting with our culture," Manthe said.

The co-op started in 2016 and has grown over 20,000 pounds of corn since..

DC Chocolate Design finds support and inspiration in Door County
MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL

DOOR COUNTY -- A chocolate bar featuring the Door County peninsula was the very first product Kara VanderLeest created for her business, DC Chocolate Design. It has also become one of her bestsellers, particularly popular with visitors.

When Cole and Kara VanderLeest met in Milwaukee and began dating, chocolate was just a delicious treat. Kara studied food science and worked for a chocolate company. When that company moved operations, she moved to Door County. Cole grew up in Sturgeon Bay, and he was working at Fred and Fuzzy’s Waterfront Bar and Grill, a Sister Bay restaurant that closed in 2020 when the owners sought to retire. Going back to his teen years, Cole has worked his way through the area, from Ephraim and Sister Bay to Fish Creek....

Neenah kids invent football card and pong game FUMBLE! now sold on Amazon
APPLETON POST-CRESCENT

NEENAH - Take the card game spoons, a slapdash game with more players than spoons, and give it a football theme. Then replace the spoons with table tennis balls. Then add a skills challenge of bouncing those balls into a cup. That’s FUMBLE! a "card-n-pong game” created, designed, assembled and sold by the brother and sister team of Daphne and Nolan Moore, ages 8 and 10, respectively.

"Designing a new game was really fun because you get to think about like if there’s a game sitting on the shelf and you’re walking by in the store and would you be like, 'oh this is cool' or would it be 'nah, I don’t like that, I’m going to go find a different game,'” Daphne said.

A round of FUMBLE! starts with players cards that are passed from one player to the next with each player attempting to collect a set of matching cards. In this case five cards of the same football position....

To engage more with Appleton, Voyageurs Bakehouse opens up with meet & greet
APPLETON POST-CRESCENT

APPLETON -- Matthew Kaneziora, a Lawrence University student, had never visited Voyageurs Bakehouse, 201 W. College Ave. in Appleton, before it hosted an open house Nov. 10. Kaneziora heard about the event from a friend who subscribed to Voyageurs' email newsletters and brought him along.

The event was meant to bring in new customers like Kaneziora who had never had Voyageurs' food and to allow the owners, Celeste Parins and Ben Cadman, an opportunity to engage more with the Appleton community.

Parins and Cadman have been fielding the question "How is Appleton doing?" since the bakehouse - Voyageurs' second location - opened in Appleton last December. But Parins said the answer isn't as simple as a short "It's great!" As owners, Cadman and Parins had to debate how candid to be with customers....
