Packers Foundation awards $1 million in annual grants
GREEN BAY PACKERS

The Green Bay Packers Foundation announced this week it has distributed $1 million in annual grants to 274 civic and charitable groups throughout the state of Wisconsin in its annual distribution of grants. Tom Cardella, chairperson of the Foundation, made the announcement.

The recipient groups were guests at a luncheon in the Lambeau Field Atrium, which honored the outstanding efforts and services performed by each of the organizations. Of the Foundation's contributions Tuesday, 34 grants – aggregating $136,000 – were awarded to Brown County organizations. Additional grants, totaling $864,000, were made to 240 other groups around the state...

'Biggest thing to happen in Sturgeon Bay in 30 years:' Excitement over new ship building

STURGEON BAY -- It was standing room only early on Tuesday afternoon as the South Yard Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding officially opened its doors.

Two new buildings were constructed for the project.

Building 433 is 92,000 square feet, and building 411 is just slightly smaller at 67,000 square feet.

Pierce Manufacturing is adding more than 200 jobs with expansions in Fox Crossing and Neenah

FOX CROSSING – A Fox Cities-based business is adding more than 200 new jobs via expansions in two of its buildings.

Pierce Manufacturing, a subsidiary of Oshkosh Corp., announced Tuesday the groundbreaking of a 90,000-square-foot expansion to the company’s 360,000-square-foot headquarters at 2600 American Drive in Fox Crossing. An additional 60,000 square feet of production space will be added to Pierce’s facility at 1515 County O in the Town of Neenah, according to a news release...

WEC Energy Group plans to eliminate coal as energy source by 2035
BIZ TIMES

Milwaukee-based WEC Energy Group plans to eliminate coal as an energy source by 2035, a dramatic drop from the 36% of electricity that came from coal in 2020.

To help make that happen, the company is increasing its capital investment in renewables by $1.3 billion in its latest 5-year capital plan. The 2022 to 2026 plan calls for $5.4 billion to be spent on renewables, up from $4.1 billion in the 2021 to 2025 version.

The latest plan also increases spending on grid and fleet reliability by $500 million to $6.8 billion...

Lakeshore Technical College has again been named one of the top 150 Community Colleges in the nation.

The Aspen Institute, which charges itself with helping to solve big problems through big ideas, honored LTC for the sixth consecutive time, making the college eligible to compete for the $1 million Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. LTC was selected from among more than 1,000 community colleges nationwide as having high and improving levels of student success as well as equitable outcomes for Black and Hispanic students and those from lower-income backgrounds...

Fincantieri Bay to build second Polaris LNG bunkering barge
MARINE LOG 

STURGEON BAY -- Sturgeon Bay- based Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding has agreed to partner with PNE Marine Holdings, an affiliate of Polaris New Energy to build a second 5,500 cubic meter LNG bunker barge. This new barge will be a sister vessel to the LNG bunker barge Clean Canaveral, which is set for delivery to Polaris later this month.

Demand for LNG as a marine fuel is growing rapidly, with over 400 new LNG-fueled vessels set to enter service over the next several years. Polar New Energy is a unit Northstar Midstream and the new barge adds to Northstar’s growing fleet delivering LNG to cruise ships, container vessels, bulk carriers, car carriers, and tankers that are in service or on order today...

Smart Girls Rock!, high school students explore STEM careers

APPLETON - Smart Girls Rock!, that’s the theme of a program for high school girls put on by the Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce. The program is designed to get young women interested in STEM careers.

From welding to crane operating and even creating packaging -- those are just some of the careers, nearly a hundred girls from several Fox Cities high schools, are being exposed to at the Smart Girls Rock! event.

“We’re trying to encourage more girls, at a younger age, to get involved in STEM careers and this is their opportunity to figure out what they want to do and ask questions of people in the field,” says Melissa Haen from the Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce...

Apprenticeship program for Kewaunee, Door county students get regional award, record participation

LUXEMBURG - The Ahnapee Regional Youth Apprenticeship program received a couple pieces of good news in the past week.

First, it reported a record number of student participants this school year, its fifth, with 284 students from seven high schools in Kewaunee and Door counties signed up and placed in jobs with 183 employers by the end of September.

Second, Jen Johnson, the program's director, was named the winner of the Career Pathmaker – Educator Award for 2021 by the Northeast Wisconsin Manufacturing Alliance during its 10th annual Excellence in Manufacturing/K-12 Partnerships Awards ceremony held Oct. 26 at the KI Convention Center in Green Bay...
