Meet Sydetasker, a Milwaukee-made app for the gig economy
WISCONSIN INNO

From cat grooming and fish-tank cleaning to grandfather-clock moving and hole digging, the co-founders of Sydetasker have seen their share of odd job requests.

Their app, which launched in January, connects users who need a service — such as yard work, moving or cleaning — with taskers who can complete the job and securely collect payment.

Co-founder and CEO Colin Milligan, 24, started the company as a college student at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh....

Strengthening communities: WWBIC assists small business owners with loans, education
INSIGHT PUBLICATIONS

When the pandemic arrived and small businesses searched for direction, Colleen Bies saw an opportunity to assist. As a small business owner herself, Bies knew she could help walk others through the process of seeking loans, grants and other assistance.

“I had this idea of going online and recording a bunch of free webinars because I had noticed that during the pandemic, people that really needed the help didn’t get that. And the people that didn’t really need the help, got all the help they needed,” says Bies, who also has a finance and accounting background.

Then, a colleague told her, “‘I keep seeing this job posting on LinkedIn — sounds an awful lot like what you want to do.’” The position was with Wisconsin Women’s Business Initiative Corp., or WWBIC....

No kidding: Goat cheese is serious business for LaClare Family Creamery
INSIGHT PUBLICATIONS

MALONE -- Glance at any restaurant menu these days and you’re likely to see chevre featured, whether crumbled on a salad, slathered on a sandwich or dotting a pizza.

The ascent of goat cheese, which often goes by the name of chevre, its most popular variety, is unmissable. And yet many people are still learning about the product — and hold preconceived notions.

LaClare Family Creamery in the small Fond du Lac County town of Malone has built its reputation on goat cheese, and the team there has encountered the whole spectrum of sentiments — from goat cheese fanatics to people who have never tried the product to those who have and are sure they don’t like it....

Down to a science: Diversified Woodcrafts provides equipment for classrooms
INSIGHT PUBLICATIONS

SURING -- When Dave Jahnke was 22 years old, he took a job with a company called Anderson Lake Industries in Suring. The company had recently moved into a new facility — a repurposed old country store — from a garage that belonged to the father of the company founder.

The company’s main product was equipment for science classrooms: drying racks for test tubes, meter sticks and tables.

Within his first year, someone handed Jahnke a few pages out of a science classroom furniture catalog and asked him to see if he could improve upon some of the products. He did, and before long, the company was working in tandem with other Midwestern businesses that also produced items for science classrooms.

SBDC releases new entrepreneurial how-to video series
INSIGHT PUBLICATIONS

APPLETON -- Appleton entrepreneur Ryan McMurtrie has always enjoyed debates — not the political ones where candidates try to outshout each other — but thoughtful discussions where real ideas are shared and the tone is respectful.

He hopes a tool he’s developed called Collective Reflection will bring together people who think differently to discuss complex issues in a respectful way. While currently a web-based tool, it will eventually be developed into an app. Designed by Blue Door Consulting in Oshkosh, the tool is used in a group setting where two individuals square off on a crucial and contemporary topic in front of an audience. Spectators vote to rate the conversation based on the debaters’ respect, time management, open-mindedness and accuracy. The debaters see real-time reactions to their conversations, providing a feedback loop that results in civil discourse....
