Balancing act: Intermodal freight study weighs New North's inbound, outbound freight
INSIGHT PUBLICATIONS

Since Canadian National closed its freight terminals in Green Bay and Neenah, about three-quarters of New North manufacturers have relied heavily on drayage to and from Chicago to meet inbound and outbound shipping needs — costing time and money.

One small exception in the region is Oshkosh Corporation, which in 2018 drove the establishment of a Watco terminal in Oshkosh. Two existing intermodal freight facilities in Wisconsin are similarly anchored by major companies: one in Chippewa Falls, driven by the business of Menards, and one in Arcadia anchored by Ashley Furniture...

Green Bay Packaging makes materials for "thousands" of shipping boxes each day
WGBA

GREEN BAY — A worker standing next to one of the mega machines inside Green Bay Packaging's mill along the Fox River in Green Bay helps put into context the sheer size of the equipment.

"It's a huge place," said Chad Pingel, who has worked at Green Bay Packaging for 12 years. The new mill opened last year, and produces materials that are used to make shipping boxes.

Thousands of boxes could be made each day from what is produced at the plant, said William Cone, vice president and general manager of the Green Bay Mill Division...

Yes, Manitowoc has an airport -- and it plays an important role in the local economy. Here's how.
MANITOWOC HERALD TIMES REPORTER

MANITOWOC - Set off from Menasha Avenue and surrounded by wide-open green space sits Manitowoc County Airport.

On a windy and overcast October afternoon, not many planes were flying into or out of the county airport. “A lot of people don’t even realize Manitowoc has an airport,” said Bryan Linger, who has been the airport's manager since October 2020. “We really want to change that.”

For the federal fiscal year ending Sept. 14, 2021, the airport had 33,100 aircraft operations — an average of 91 per day, according to airport reports. Of those, 97% were general aviation, 3% were air taxi and less than 1% were military takeoffs or landings...

Expansion and Business Development in the New North
Green Lake strong: KDR Wood Design Co. plans expansion
INSIGHT PUBLICATIONS

Kaleb Ranker grew up in a woodworking family — he and his father, Kevin, built houses together. It seemed only natural that he’d follow that path as owner of KDR Wood Design Co. in Green Lake.

Eight years after starting his custom woodworking business, Ranker’s company broke ground on a large expansion in Green Lake’s Hwy. 23 Industrial Park.

“We’ve worked really hard in the last few years to keep pushing and growing,” says Ranker. “It’s a big change, but it’s also a positive change that’s needed, not only for us and our existing business, but to continue to grow Green Lake.”...

Home base: Sheboygan County looks to bolster housing as business booms
INSIGHT PUBLICATIONS

Sheboygan County is home to some of Wisconsin’s largest, fastest-growing companies, including Kohler, Acuity, Masters Gallery Foods, Sargento and Johnsonville — and their success has led to a housing shortage leaders say is likely to be the county’s top priority over the next five years or longer.

“Housing continues to be at the forefront,” says Chad Pelishek, director of planning and development for the City of Sheboygan. “We finished an affordable housing market study in March of 2021, and we need to build 1,000 units of affordable multi-family units and 1,000 single family, so we have a lot of work to do to try to keep up with the demands.”...

Manufacturers open their doors to Door County area students
DOOR COUNTY DAILY NEWS

The sight of school buses entering the Sturgeon Bay Industrial Park during your morning commute on Thursday could be the start of a new generation of manufacturing employees in Door County.

Over 300 students representing all five Door County school districts and Algoma visited 12 manufacturers throughout the county, including NEW Industries, Therma-Tron-X, and Hatco, as a part of Manufacturing Day organized by the Door County Economic Development Corporation and the Door County Manufacturers Association.

Students got to tour the manufacturing facilities and see current employees in action producing hundreds of different products. NEW Industries' Dave Moore, Jake Schinktgen, and Christine Conlon say with the need for new employees that they are seeing, you can never start too young to inspire the next generation...

For fifth straight year, UW Oshkosh named among best schools for men in nursing
UW OSHKOSH

The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh College of Nursing (CON) has once again been named among the nation’s best schools for men in nursing by the American Association for Men in Nursing (AAMN).

The award, which UW Oshkosh has now earned five years in a row, is designed to recognize a nursing school or college that has provided significant efforts in recruiting and retaining men in nursing, in providing men a supportive educational environment and in educating faculty, students and the community about the contributions men have and do make to the nursing profession.

“This award recognizes the College of Nursing’s dedication to promoting an inclusive and supportive academic environment,” said CON Dean Seon Yoon Chung. “I am grateful to work alongside faculty and staff who share core values, including diversity, collaboration and excellence. I appreciate our students’ leadership and contribution through the UWO Great Lakes AAMN Chapter.”..
