Walbec Group hosts 2022 Smart Girls Rock! event to highlight STEM careers for women
WALBEC GROUP

GREENVILLE – Walbec Group, a family of construction companies helping people reach their destinations, is proud to host the Smart Girls Rock! event put on by the Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce. On Wednesday, Nov. 2, from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m., nearly 100 area high school girls will get hands-on experience by meeting with women who work in local STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) careers. The event will take place at Northeast Asphalt (NEA), a professional asphalt production and construction services division of Walbec Group, located at W6380 Design Dr. in Greenville (map).

"Women play critical roles in STEM careers. As industry leaders, it's our responsibility and necessary right now to mentor the next generation of young ladies in what is possible," explained Bridget Kraus, vice president of marketing at Walbec Group. "Hands-on activities and exposure to professional mentors in our Walbec shop will give these young ladies an understanding of what to expect and enable them to visualize themselves in similar roles. If we can spark curiosity and interest for just one student to pursue one of these career paths, then we will have been successful."...

Groundbreaking Partnership Keeps Communities Informed
COMMUNITY FOUNDATION FOR THE FOX VALLEY REGION

A recent report from Northwestern University, “The State of Local News 2022,” painted an alarming picture of the loss of local journalism in communities across the United States, calling it a “crisis for our democracy and our society.” The annual study noted the country lost more than a quarter of its 2,500 newspapers since 2005 and is on track to lose one-third by 2025.

Researchers found that more than 20% of the nation’s citizens live in news deserts, defined as areas with limited access to local news. The 208 counties without a newspaper are home to 70 million people, while another 1,630 counties have one newspaper, usually a weekly, covering larger areas than they have the resources to keep watch over local government, schools or other important community institutions. “The crisis in journalism has turned into a crisis of democracy,” said Steve Waldman, the president of Report for America. “The reporter shortage means residents don’t have the information to make decisions for their families or to hold institutions accountable.”..

NBC 26

MANITOWOC — The building used to be a church in downtown Manitowoc.

But now, down in the basement, you'll see an indoor lettuce farm. Amber Daugs got the idea after she went to a food pantry when she was homeless more than 20 years ago.

"We weren't able to have a hot plate, a microwave or a refrigerator of course," she said. "So having something that was quick and nutritious was really what I was looking for."

So in 2014, she founded Grow It Forward in Manitowoc County...
