Barbara Koldos, vice president for business development at New North, Inc., joked that she earned the nickname “Broadband Barbara” after leading her organization’s 18-county broadband study alongside Jack Maytum of the Virginia-based consultancy Design Nine. Koldos says the project involved 72 meetings with stakeholders over the course of just three months; a final report was issued in May...

Brown Well Worn: Heritage shoemaker W.C. Russell Moccasin Co. hand stitches history, one pair of boots at a time
INSIGHT PUBLICATIONS

On a quiet street in a quiet Wisconsin town sits an ivy-covered building that’s anything but quiet.

The clangor of hammers and the whir of sewing machines emanate from W.C. Russell Moccasin Company in Berlin, as the craftsmen within handmake custom-fitted leather footwear for a diverse clientele the world over — including game hunters from the company’s birthplace in Green Lake County and hipsters as far away as Japan.

The sounds and smells (even outside the building, the air hangs heavy with the smoky scent of rich leather) beckon a bygone era, a time when one-off production wasn’t just the preferred way — it was the only way.

Despite having access to modern-day technology and techniques, boots and shoes at Russell Moccasin are still made the way they have been since the company’s founding in 1898, says Chief Operating Officer Joe Gonyo. Every boot is hand lasted, hand cut and hand sewn to the exact measurements of the customer’s foot, taken either in person at trade shows or the Berlin factory showroom, or submitted in the mail as a hand-drawn tracing...

Eye on cyber: Tech adoption outpaces security, leaving manufacturers vulnerable
INSIGHT PUBLICATIONS

It’s widely understood that the adoption of smart technology is a central issue in modern manufacturing, and adoption has been accelerated by the COVID pandemic and labor shortages. In 2021, St. Norbert College’s Industry 4.0 Needs, Skills & Talent Survey reflected exactly that trend, with nearly three-quarters of Northeast Wisconsin manufacturers indicating plans to increase investments in automation in the next three years.

And there are plenty of other tech topics on manufacturers’ lips: industrial IoT, big data analytics, cloud computing, virtual reality. But there’s one Industry 4.0 concern that trumps them all: cybersecurity...
