Sheboygan North senior makes surfing accessible for everyone
SHEBOYGAN SUN

SHEBOYGAN – Sheboygan North senior Carolyne van Deventer is sharing her love of surfing and opening up new possibilities for those with physical disabilities in Seas the Day, the first adaptive surfing program in the Midwest.

“The idea for this stemmed from my love for surfing since I was around three years old after growing up on an island in the Caribbean (Anguilla), as well as my inherent desire to help those in our community. I wanted to develop a program that removed every barrier possible, allowing for a truly memorable and lasting experience,” said van Deventer.

The first Seas the Day event took place at Sheboygan’s North Beach on July 30, and involved over 100 volunteers and supporters. In the event, volunteers helped children with disabilities experience the joy of surfing. The children rode adaptive surfboards specially designed by van Deventer and built by Mike Miller of EOS Surf Shop, 510 N. 8th St. in Sheboygan...

Brown County eyes water research center as catalyst for Renard Island development
WLUK

GREEN BAY -- Brown County is hoping Renard Island is selected as the site for a highly-coveted water research center, which is expected to attract local education groups and visitors from outside the region.

The island was built in the late 1970s as a place to put toxic PCB sediment dredged from the bay harbor. It has since been capped and is ready for development.

At the mouth of the Fox River and neighbors with Bay Beach Amusement Park, Renard Island is being pitched as the perfect spot to put a NERR facility. NERR stands for National Estuarine Research Reserve...
