Sturgeon Bay board backs new building for Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding

Plans for Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding to construct a new, 65-foot-by-300-foot building along 3rd Avenue were approved Monday by Sturgeon Bay’s Aesthetic Design and Site Plan Review Board.

The company stated in its application seeking approval for the new building and related site work that the project is needed to add production capabilities and capacity at its Sturgeon Bay facility after it was awarded two contracts for liquefied natural gas barges and a U.S. Navy contract. The application further stated that Fincantieri plans to use the new building as a machine shop to service the entire Sturgeon Bay yard’s machining needs...

Brown County awards $1 million of ARPA funding to local nonprofits

BROWN COUNTY -- Brown County announced that it will be awarding part of its remaining American Rescue Plan Act funding to 16 local nonprofits.

ARPA funds are intended to be used for relief to community members recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach says that the county's Board of Supervisors has agreed that one of the most effective ways to support the community is through its nonprofit organizations that assist families and individuals...

APPLETON - Imagine Fox Cities is planning a week of inclusive events aimed at finding ways for everyone to feel they belong in the Fox Cities.

Strive to Thrive Week, which runs Monday through Friday , features over 20 events and workshops structured around four goals: early childhood development, placemaking, economic development and belonging.

The week begins with an opening ceremony explaining the group's mission and a preview of events at 1 p.m. Monday at Poplar Hall.

Strive to Thrive Week marks the last phase in the group's "Summer of Belonging" initiative that is bringing together local organizations and community members to address how to make everyone feel they belong in the Fox Cities....

Big steps for Door County Housing Partnership

The Door County Housing Partnership announced in July that its first home-build project is available for sale in Sturgeon Bay. The three-bedroom, two-bathroom, 1,200-square-foot home is for sale for $130,000 for income-qualified buyers who are, or plan to be, year-round residents of Door County.

For Mariah Goode and the team behind the new organization, it’s the start of what they hope is something much bigger.

“It’s exciting, obviously,” Goode said. “This is the third attempt at a housing-trust model up here, and we have to give credit to two groups prior to us that tried to start something like this that just weren’t able to get traction. We learned a lot from their work.”...

Appleton high school students unveil colorful, 100-foot mural

APPLETON -- A group of high school students are showing off their hard work after completing a 100-foot mural in Appleton.

It can be found on the side of Jersey Bagel & Deli. When asked what his favorite part of the project was, one of the co-leaders didn't hesitate.

"The kids. Hundred percent the kids," said artist Neo Medina. "Tonight's their night you know they're the stars. That's what this is for -- you know, highlighting folks that don't get that type of recognition. Just to see them shine, see them reap the benefits of all their hard work, this moment is what I've been waiting for."

Students received class credit and a $400 stipend for successfully completing the mural.
