NORTHEAST WISCONSIN TECHNICAL COLLEGE (NWTC)

GREEN BAY -- After 25 years of service to higher education across Northeast Wisconsin, Dr. H. Jeffrey Rafn, president of Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, has announced his retirement effective July 1, 2023.

“It has been a distinct honor and privilege to lead Northeast Wisconsin Technical College,” said Dr. Rafn. “Over the years, my focus has been to serve the community to ensure everyone has the opportunity to engage and succeed within higher education. Unemployment in Kewaunee County among lowest in the state
DOOR COUNTY DAILY NEWS

KEWAUNEE COUNTY -- You will still see plenty of help-wanted signs around Kewaunee County, but finding people who do not work is harder. At their meeting on Tuesday, Kewaunee County Economic Development Corporation Executive Director Ben Nelson updated the Kewaunee County Board on the organization’s efforts.

At 2.9 percent, Kewaunee County had the fifth lowest unemployment rate in the state in June. By comparison, Door County is in 11th place at three percent, and Brown County is 25th with 3.2 percent. It also means Kewaunee County’s labor participation rate is high at 97 percent.

Nelson added that both numbers are higher than they were before the pandemic. Those two pieces of data show there is not a large local pool of employees to draw from, and if you are looking for work and are of age, you should not have a problem finding a job. Nelson pointed out ways Kewaunee County businesses can help attract employees to fill the over 100 vacant positions in the community....

Two Rivers beach groomer creates sand art
WFRV

TWO RIVERS – If you have ever been to the beach, you may have built a sandcastle or written your name in the sand, but you probably never created intricate patterns that cover the whole beach.

That’s what Chris De Kok, a two rivers native and sand groomer does on a regular basis. Using a tractor and drag, he makes these spirals, or as he calls them cinnamon rolls.

For De Kok, his goal is to draw more people out to Two Rivers and Neshotah Beach. He says, “I just want to try to help reinvent our city here. We’ve got this lovely beach here, and if I do a good job down here, that’s all a part of the bonus package.”

Raising Awareness For Inclusion In The Outdoors
COMMUNITY FOUNDATION FOR THE FOX VALLEY REGION

FOX CITIES -- When we learn that there’s an opportunity to improve our community, what is our obligation to act?

For the past six months, I’ve been learning and gathering input about how folks in the Fox Cities feel about the outdoors through interviews, focus groups, and a survey. I’m now convinced that the Fox Cities have a great opportunity to fully include their BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) and LGBTQ+ members in our outdoor spaces.

At a time when the area’s BIPOC population is growing and more and more people are coming out as queer and transgender, we need to recognize that those members make up a large portion of our neighbors. Unfortunately, many of them don’t enjoy our public outdoor spaces as easily or as much as they would like to. As I wrote in May, the reasons are as diverse as our population. Many cite frustration with being treated as if they don’t belong and fears for personal safety. These are not abstract concerns: just in the last year, we’ve seen crimes against Black and queer people in our area that have put these communities on edge...
The Inclusion in the Outdoors Initiative is supported by a $6,700 grant from the Bright Idea Fund within the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley. An Inclusion in the Outdoors event will be held Tuesday, August 23rd from 2:15–4 p.m. at Gordon Bubolz Nature Preserve.
