Kewaunee County awarded $1.3 million grant to expand broadband

KEWAUNEE COUNTY — Kewaunee County is getting $1.3 million to expand the public's access to high-speed internet.

The $1.3 million broadband expansion grant from the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC) will help the county provide high-speed internet to businesses and residents. According to a statement from the county, it has received a total of $3.7 million in grant funds since it first began enhancing broadband access for the public....

Green Bay and Fox Valley Boys & Girls Clubs receive STEM grants

NEW NORTH -- A grant is providing two area Boys & Girls Clubs with increased access to STEM learning experiences.

UScellular is giving $60,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Green Bay and the Fox Valley to support K-12 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and academic enrichment programs.

Each club will get $30,000. They will use the money to purchase equipment, software, technology, staffing and training, the development of new STEM activities and the funding of two STEM staff positions to deliver programs....

J.F. Ahern Co. has been ranked among the top environmental companies in Engineering News-Record’s annual survey of the Top 200 Environmental Firms. The company reported revenue from project activity for 2021, encompassing the measured categories of air quality and clean energy, water supply and treatment and wastewater treatment.

Ahern continues to advance in this area, moving up 33 spots from last year and designated as the 160th largest environmental service provider in the country.

ASHWAUBENON – Fifteen girls from YWCA TechGYRLS spent the day at the National Railroad Museum in the Village of Ashwaubenon on Tuesday.

TechGYRLS is a program that empowers young women to learn about different programs and careers that are out in the job field that tend to be considered ‘male-dominated’ such as construction, carpentry, and rail work.

Appleton group gives, receives gifts to connect neighbors and create community

When Sarah Scanlan met a woman she messaged on Facebook in her Appleton garden, she expected to give away camomile tea leaves. But then the two connected over composting, too, and Scanlan walked away with a gardening friend and a deeper sense of community.

The two women met because of Appleton’s Buy Nothing Facebook group, which Scanlan co-founded with neighbor James Bacon. Members are encouraged to give away possessions they no longer want and ask for what they need.

Lakeland University will host an open house at its new Fox Cities Center location at Fox Valley Technical College’s Appleton campus, 1825 N Bluemound Dr., from 9 a.m.-6:30 p.m. on August 24.

At 5:30 p.m., Lakeland President Dr. Beth Borgen and FVTC President Dr. Chris Matheny will be part of a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially kick off the next chapter in this decades-long partnership.

Lakeland staff will be available throughout the day at the center, located inside FVTC Entrance 15, to provide a tour of LU’s new space. Staff can also discuss how Lakeland will continue to serve its students and make it easier for FVTC graduates to complete a bachelor’s or master’s degree...

Lakeshore Technical College’s Heidi Soodsma Receives National Recognition for Exemplary Service

The Association of Community College Trustees has awarded Heidi Soodsma, executive assistant and senior advisor to the president at Lakeshore Technical College, its 2022 Professional Board Staff Member Award for the association’s central region. She is one of five candidates eligible for the association’s national-level award. That award will be announced in October at an awards presentation held during the annual ACCT Leadership Congress in New York.
