Three Wisconsin-based companies are included in Fast Company magazine’s fourth annual Best Workplaces for Innovators list.

Developed in collaboration with Accenture, the 2022 Best Workplaces for Innovators list consists of 100 companies from 13 countries. Fast Company editors and Accenture researchers worked together to score nearly 1,500 applications, and a panel of eight judges reviewed and endorsed the top 100 companies.

Sheboygan's hi-lo bakery has new owner

SHEBOYGAN — The Sheboygan County Economic Development Corporation (SCEDC) and Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at UW-Green Bay aim to provide a wide variety of services, resources, and expertise to help encourage entrepreneurial opportunities in Sheboygan County, including new and existing businesses that offer unique services and experiences to the community. With the assistance of the SCEDC and SBDC, Zach Norman has become the new owner of Hi-Lo Bakery in Sheboygan, WI.

Hi-Lo provides wholesale Hard rolls and buns for large corporate functions, brat fries, benefits, and large get-togethers. The name Hi-Lo Bakery has been around since 1977, and the building in Sheboygan has been a bakery since World War II...

MANITOWOC -- When the shape of a cow starts popping out of a block of cheddar, Sarah Kaufmann is close to bringing her latest cheese sculpture to life.

"And you put a little eyeball in and the cow comes alive," she said. After adding a pupil, "it pops and it's looking at you."

Kaufmann dons a black-and-white Holstein-patterned apron, complete with a bovine tail she made herself, as she carves cows, cactus, guitar or peaches out of cheese blocks at select Culver's "From Wisconsin With Love" food truck stops this summer, which rolls into Milwaukee for a stop Aug. 3 in the Deer District...

SHEBOYGAN - Although playing games may often be associated with children, The GameBoard, 621 N. Eighth St., works to provide a space for people of all ages to engage in gameplay.

Lynn Potyen, The GameBoard owner, said the association with games and kids began around the 1950s when major game players started advertising to kids while they watched Saturday morning cartoons.

“That’s not real. That's a false narrative that was done by Corporate America,” Potyen said. “So, undoing that narrative, and helping people understand that games are for everybody — I think (that) has grown a lot more in the last 50 years. Since the 1970s, this has been a movement that has been trying to gain momentum.”...

MARINETTE -- When Salina and Eduardo Hernandez of Marinette wanted corn tortillas to make a favorite recipe, they had to travel to Green Bay. They hoped that a Hispanic grocery store would locate in the area, but as the years passed without that happening, they made it their dream.

“We thought about it for about five years and built up our savings to make it happen,” Salina explained. “By 2020, we were ready to go forward, but with the pandemic it wasn’t a possibility. We had a lot of hardships and had to use our savings to make ends meet.”

Although their savings were reduced, the plans for a store began in earnest in 2021. They contacted the Green Bay SCORE Chapter and were matched with Mentor Paul Carron...

The RLF is available through Sheboygan County’s Industrial Development and Revolving Loan Agency.
