Gov. Evers Announces More Than $5 Million in Workforce Innovation Grants to Support Wisconsin’s Healthcare Workforce (including UWGB for nursing training)
OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR - STATE OF WISCONSIN

RIVER FALLS — Gov. Tony Evers today announced more than $5 million in grants through the second round of the Workforce Innovation Grant Program will be awarded to the Wisconsin Community Action Program Association (WISCAP) and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, through the University of Wisconsin (UW) System Board of Regents, for training efforts that support long-term solutions to Wisconsin’s healthcare workforce challenges.

“While no industry or community has been immune to the workforce challenges facing our state, one of the hardest hit industries these last few years has been without a doubt our healthcare industry,” said Gov. Evers. “Prioritizing programs that help ensure a strong future for our healthcare workforce has never been more important, and I am thrilled to be announcing funds to support two critical programs that are not only helping individuals find successful employment in the industry, but ensuring we have the workforce to teach the next generation of healthcare providers as well.”..

Pilot program allowing 18-year-old long-haul truck drivers could boost industry
WISCONSIN PUBLIC RADIO

A Wisconsin trucking CEO said a new program permitting 18-year-olds to travel across state lines may help boost his company's apprenticeship opportunities.

A provision in the bipartisan infrastructure law that passed in late 2021 allows 18-year-olds to become interstate truckers. Formerly, truckers needed to be 21 years old to do that work.

Green Bay-based Schneider trucking has long struggled to hire as many drivers as demand would support. Speaking on Wisconsin Public Radio's "The Morning Show" on Thursday, Schneider CEO Mark Rourke said the new program will help...

Officials prepare USS Cobia for dry docking project
WLUK

MANITOWOC -- Officials took a step forward in preserving an historic landmark vessel.

Divers were underneath the USS Cobia at the Maritime Museum in Manitowoc Thursday for an underwater hull inspection.

The inspection is to prepare the USS Cobia for dry docking.

According to a submarine curator, keeping the USS Cobia in "ship shape" on the water costs over $150,000 annually.

The estimated cost to dry dock it would be least $1 million. The money needs to be raised through sponsors and private donors.
