Meet the Sheboygan North High School senior behind the new children's storybook trail at Maywood park

SHEBOYGAN - Emily Fisher has been a regular visitor at Sheboygan’s Maywood park since before she can remember, but didn’t know the history of the park until recently.

Now a senior at North High School, Fisher wrote, illustrated and installed a children’s storybook trail at the park to promote environmentalism and honor Ellwood and Mary May, who donated the land for the park (formally called Ellwood H. May Environmental Park) to the City of Sheboygan four decades ago, according to the park website...

MANITOWOC - Manitowoc’s Rahr-West Art Museum has launched a Public Art Tour app.

With 31 stops featuring Manitowoc’s public art, there is a sight for everyone to see in the walkable tour of the downtown area and nearby parks.

The app features an interactive map depicting the location of each mural and sculpture.

In addition, every public art stop is described in detail including the piece’s title, location, artist(s) and the creative inspiration behind the piece....

DE PERE – Kelly Schwartz, the brains behind local start-up Fridge Jerky, said she was on cloud nine May 26 as she returned home from The Blueprint Green Bay Pitch Night – the culmination of the Greater Green Bay Chamber’s second installment of its 12-week startup accelerator program.

“I wasn’t at home (May 26) because I was at the Urban Hub giving my final pitch for my business,” Schwartz said. “You want to talk about riding an absolute utter high – I had samples there and everybody that tried it was like ‘Oh my gosh, I want to buy this. It’s amazing. The best jerky I’ve ever had.’ And then I come home and it was just absolute shell shock.”...

GRAND CHUTE – One of the Fox Cities’ favorite coffee shops is expanding.

Seth’s Coffee will take over the former All Seasons Coffeehouse space at 1390 Popp Lane later this summer. All Seasons, which opened in 2013, closed late last summer.

It’ll be the third location for Seth’s Coffee, which has its flagship shop at 106 E. Main St. in downtown Little Chute, as well as a drive-thru-only location at 323 E. Washington St. in downtown Appleton...

WISCONSIN GOVERNOR'S BUSINESS PLAN CONTEST 

A Milwaukee-based firm with a system to help stop untreated sewage from being dumped into waterways during floods is the grand prize winner of the 19th annual Wisconsin Governor’s Business Plan Contest.

Rapid Radicals Technology, which can treat water at a municipal scale where there is a spill point confluence of storm and sanitary sewers, was also the winner of the contest’s Advanced Manufacturing category.

Founder and chief technology officer Paige Peters presented for Rapid Radicals, which was among 13 “Diligent (Baker’s) Dozen” finalists to present Wednesday to judges and others during the 20th annual Wisconsin Entrepreneurs’ Conference. The company is commercializing technology developed at Marquette University....

HOBART – A 10-year dream will become a reality Sunday when CrossFire Fitness opens its doors at 3879 Packerland Drive in Hobart.

Angel Van Noie and Jenny Conley, co-owners, say it will be a gym unlike any other in the area.

“We are the first to offer a well-rounded fitness facility with reasonable membership pricing that is not a large gym,” Van Noie said. “We offer a large variety of group fitness classes along with personal training, nutritional services, access to the gym when classes aren’t taking place, and intermittent kids’ classes — all while striving to stay a small community- and family-based facility.”...

SHEBOYGAN - Jake’s, A Lakeland Community has its grand opening from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and a Kohler native has been tapped to lead the downtown experiential learning and entrepreneurship hub, Lakeland University announced last week.

Stephanie Hoskins, co-founder of cloud-based software company Debtle, will lead development of the hub, which is at 529 Ontario Ave. in downtown Sheboygan. Hoskins will serve as the inaugural Herbert V. Kohler Jr. Chair for Business & Entrepreneurship..

Lakeland University, SCEDC launch Sheboygan County Innovation Council

A new partnership has been formed that will provide a centralized approach to growing and supporting innovation and entrepreneurship in Sheboygan County.

The Sheboygan County Economic Development Corporation and Lakeland University will create and manage the Sheboygan County Innovation Council, advising and guiding innovation-based programming and services.

SCEDC Executive Director Brian Doudna said that the agreement will create a stronger technical support eco-system for up to six new start-ups that will compete for $10,000 each. That money comes from a SEED Accelerator grant provided by the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, which the new Innovation Council will administer...
