Moraine Park Technical College recognizes business and industry partners
INSIGHT ON BUSINESS

Moraine Park Technical College awarded its annual Business and Industry Partner Awards April 26.

The College’s Economic and Workforce Development recognizes five partnership awards each year: Excellence in Partnership, Employer of the Year, Innovation, New Partner of the Year and Workforce Development Champion.

“The Business Partner Awards were created as a way to recognize and show our appreciation for the employers in our district,” JoAnn Hall, dean of economic and workforce development at Moraine Park, said. “It takes a village, and when you grow, we grow and our community grows. Thank you for being part of our village.”

Two New North meat processors get infrastructure grants
INSIGHT ON BUSINESS

Two New North region meat processing businesses received funds from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection Meat Processor Infrastructure Grant Program.

Salchert Meats of St. Cloud will use the funds to provide infrastructure for long-term sustainability and D-D Meat Processing, Sheboygan Falls, will invest in refrigeration and industrial tank expansion.

"Wisconsin’s meat processors are a key component of a resilient supply chain, and I was proud to support them in their work by creating this grant program in 2021," said Gov. Tony Evers. “Even still, need continues to outpace available funding, which is why investing in and supporting our local meat processors continues to be a top priority for me and our budget includes an additional $1.6 million to continue this successful program. I look forward to the Legislature joining me by supporting this opportunity to invest in our meat processors and bolster this critical supply chain well into the future.”

Small Towns: Wittenberg schoolhouse attracts visitors from far away
WBAY

WITTENBERG, Wis. (WBAY) - Well over a century old, a one-room schoolhouse in Shawano County has found new life. And in the process, its history is being enjoyed by visitors from around the country.

This week in Small Towns, we traveled to Wittenberg to see this priceless gem.

This same old bell summoned children to Wittenberg’s very first schoolhouse, built in 1882 -- a job it rang out for nearly 40 years.

“It was a schoolhouse then until 1920, and then it became the village hall after that,” explains Marie Williams, Nueske’s Schoolhouse Market historian.

Leadership in the New North
Katie Krouse becomes first female executive director of Door County nature sanctuary, but follows in footsteps of many other women
GREEN BAY PRESS GAZETTE

BAILEYS HARBOR ꟷ The new leader of The Ridges Sanctuary is part of a transition forward by the organization that, in a way, also completes a circle back to its origins.

Katie Krouse, who most recently has served as assistant director of The Ridges, recently was named its new executive director. She's the first female director in the 86-year history of Wisconsin's first land trust, and she said it means a lot to follow in the path of pioneering female conservationists like Emma Toft, Anna McArdle and Olivia Traven, who were leaders among the citizens who pushed the state to protect The Ridges in 1937.

"It is an honor to be recognized as the first female director of The Ridges Sanctuary," Krouse said. "However, I am just one individual following a suite of incredible women that have left their mark on The Ridges. Emma Toft, Olivia Traven, Anna McArdle, Mertha Fulkerson (formerly one of the leading advocates of The Clearing Folk School in Ellison Bay) are just a few names to note. I am in good company and am thrilled to continue as the next executive director."
