OSHKOSH -- Top leaders from across Winnebago County addressed local concerns and touted their plans for the upcoming year during a Thursday State of the Community event.

The event, hosted by the Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce at the Oshkosh Convention Center, featured a panel of representatives from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Winnebago County, the city of Oshkosh, the Oshkosh Area School District and Fox Valley Technical College.

Ripon Main Street raising funds for Village Green improvements
INSIGHT ON BUISNESS

RIPON -- Ripon Main Street Inc. is raising funds for improvements to the Village Green, the central gathering space in the community.

The goal is to raise $200,000 for amenities including 20-foot by 60-foot pergola in the middle of the green surrounded by an accessible concrete pad. Other features planned are tables and umbrellas, park benches, planters, lighting, landscaping and electrical upgrades.

The Village Green is Ripon's central gathering spot – home to the Ripon Summer Concert Series. Special events, including Ripon's Memorial Day Celebration, along with winter ice-skating, are also staged at the Village Green...

Jewelers Mutual Group launches Safety and Security Academy

Jewelers Mutual® Group, the insurance and business solutions provider dedicated to the jewelry industry since 1913, recently announced its collaboration with Jewelers’ Security Alliance (JSA) and UL Solutions to develop the Safety and Security Academy, a free online training program available for all jewelers and pawnbrokers in the U.S. and Canada, and their staff.

“Security is always a concern in the jewelry industry, and knowledge is power when it comes to jewelers’ safety,” said Mike Alexander, Chief Operating Officer at Jewelers Mutual. “With crime on the rise, it is more critical than ever to make security education a top priority. Our goal in introducing the Safety and Security Academy is to help our jewelers and pawnbrokers advance their knowledge and skills to keep themselves, their staff, and their businesses safe and secure.”

STURGEON BAY -- Yes, job fairs are designed to help people looking for work find it, and for businesses to fill job openings. But the job fair held March 29 at Stone Harbor Resort in Sturgeon Bay was meant to do more than just that.

Sponsored by Door County Economic Development Corp. and the Northeast Wisconsin Youth Apprenticeship program, the event also gave more than 500 sophomores and juniors at Sturgeon Bay, Southern Door, Sevastopol and Gibraltar high schools a chance to make connections with 43 participating local businesses and, in many cases, learn not just about available part-time and summer work but also apprenticeship and even long-term career opportunities...

GREEN BAY -- Fourteen Green Bay school district employees earned their associate degrees Thursday night from Northeast Wisconsin Technical College. These part-time staff members will now be eligible for full-time positions, which will help with staff shortages.

UW publishes new data on Wisconsin's healthiest counties, some local counties rank high

MADISON --  Calumet County is the sixth healthiest county out of 72 counties overall in Wisconsin, according to new data released this week by University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute.

Door County also ranked fairly high at number nine on the list, with Outagamie at 12, Sheboygan at 18, Kewaunee at 20, Brown at 22, and Winnebago at 39. Menominee County ranked last.
