From Cuba to Green Bay: Artist's work depicts 'complex and subtle realities' of life in his home country
GREEN BAY PRESS GAZETTE

GREEN BAY -- When Eduin Fraga was experiencing economic hardship in Cuba, he turned to art and grew to be an accomplished artist.

“I started painting at 28 years old because I saw that my brother, who is also an artist, and his friends were able to make money selling art in the market. In Cuba, work is very difficult so when you are able to sell to tourists, it is an easier way to make money,” Fraga said.

Now living in Green Bay with trips home to Cuba to visit family, Fraga was a diligent learner. He watched his brother and the other artists and studied their techniques using shapes and light. Even though neither had previous experience working in child care, they bought the building and started a licensed center of their own: Joyful Beginnings Academy....

Fond du Lac's Hotel Retlaw celebrates 100 years after unexpected closure, reopening
WLUK

FOND DU LAC -- From 1923 through 2023, the Hotel Retlaw has remained an integral part of the Fond du Lac community.

"It was the hub of the city at one time," lifelong Fond du Lac Resident Bill Weinshrott said. Weinshrott has memories at the hotel dating back to the 1940s.

"My father was a ice delivery man -- delivered ice," Weinshrott said. "When I was in the sixth grade, when it was summer vacation, my dad says, 'Well, now, you're off, so you'll help me deliver ice'. So, we used to come here about three times a day."

More than 70 years later, Weinshrott was there to see the hotel reach its 100th anniversary...
