Branching out: Menominee Tribal Enterprises remains true to roots as it plants new seeds
INSIGHT PUBLICATIONS

That foundation has guided Menominee Tribal Enterprises from its origins in the 1850s to today. While sustainability has become a focus for companies across industries, the Menominee Indian Tribe has been following that principle for generations. The efforts show.

“Right now, we have more volume of wood in our forests than we did 100 years ago … even though we’ve cut the forest, the volume, over four times since then,” says Jonathan Wilber, president of MTE. “We do not just manage our forest for the trees. We manage the forest for the animals, the streams, the species of plants that are out there. This forest has to be managed for the long haul.”...

Powerful pathway: Groups, schools promote the value of youth apprenticeship
INSIGHT PUBLICATIONS

For a youth apprenticeship participant, the experience can look like it did for Braden, Holly and Isaac, three area high school students who worked for local employers gaining hard and soft skills and earning money while also refining their career aspirations.

It can also be a more deliberate pathway, like one provided through the national nonprofit organization Jobs for the Future, which aims to take students from certified pre-apprentice or youth apprentice to registered apprentice.

Either way, organizations and schools are spreading the message that YA is for everyone and offers many pathways....

The census pushed people into strict racial categories for 200 years. A new approach reveals our region's racial complexity and diversity
GREEN BAY PRESS GAZETTE

GREEN BAY -- When she attended East High School in Green Bay, Carina Abrego-Koch's 10th grade social studies class was asked to stick a thumbtack into their family's country of origin. Holding the single thumbtack in hand, Abrego-Koch looked from Mexico to Japan, conflicted.

Mexico was already studded with tacks. Japan stood in a world of blue without a single pin. After she placed her tack on the other side of the world, her peers had several questions, and her response was part of a repertoire she had perfected over the years.

"I am half Mexican, a quarter Japanese, an eighth Irish and an eighth Norwegian," she told the class...

WBAY

DOOR COUNTY -- A Door County business owner with ties to Ukraine is doing what she can to help people in the war torn country. And the reception she’s received, is more than she could have ever imagined.

There are extra sets of hands pouring candles at Door County Candle Company, north of Sturgeon Bay. And they’re still having a hard time keeping up with orders for the shop’s newest creation.

“Her goal initially was to just sell 300 candles to raise awareness, but we are well over 3,000 as of this morning,” says Natalie Gorchynsky, mother of the shop’s owner....

Partnering for progress: Counties collaborate on child care solutions study
INSIGHT PUBLICATIONS

Employers across industries continue to struggle to find talent, and access to affordable, quality child care is one barrier to work that has become even more pronounced during the pandemic. Five counties recently partnered with the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Center for Customized Research and Services on a study aimed at identifying solutions and gathering data that could help lead to grant funding.

Calumet, Dodge, Fond du Lac, Outagamie and Winnebago counties collaborated on the study. Each county provided a list of its top 30 businesses in terms of number of employees, and those employers encouraged their workers to complete the survey...

Applications open for Project Growth grants
WISCONSIN DEPARTMENT OF CHILDREN AND FAMILIES

MADISON – The Wisconsin Department of Children and Families (DCF) opened applications today for Project Growth, a $20 million grant program designed to help solve the challenges facing Wisconsin’s child care system and bolster the state’s economy.

“Strengthening Wisconsin’s child care system is critical to supporting families and boosting our economy,” said DCF Secretary Emilie Amundson. “When parents can’t find care that meets their family’s needs, they are unable to remain in the workforce. By bringing together businesses and child care programs, we can begin to build strong, sustainable partnerships that benefit everyone.”
