This must be the place: New North region employers embrace placemaking INSIGHT PUBLICATIONS

BRILLION -- For Dan Ariens, Brillion, Wisconsin is home — and it’s where the family business has proudly manufactured its iconic orange lawn and snow removal equipment for more than 60 years. Like any Northeast Wisconsin manufacturing CEO, Ariens needs to grow his company’s workforce and is in a near-constant hiring mode. And while all major employers are recruiting, Ariens faces the added challenge of recruiting to a small town. The Calumet County community, situated along Highway 10 smack dab between Lake Winnebago and Lake Michigan, has a population of just over 3,000.

But like any good plot of prairie land, Brillion can hang its hat on the classic cinematic adage: If you build it, they will come.”...

Getting ahead of the skilled-trade demand game: Tech ed classes at Luxemburg-Casco High School aim to prepare students to thrive beyond high school, adapt to change
THE BUSINESS NEWS

LUXEMBURG – Back in the day, it was often known as “shop class.”

It was loud, full of sawdust and smelled industrial.

Not only did students earn credits toward graduation, but they could proudly display their handiwork with a shelf or tool carry.
These days, it’s known as tech ed, and the classes aim to reach far beyond graduation.

The centerpiece of many tech ed departments are the fab labs – or fabrication laboratories – which have been springing up in the past decade and a half in high schools, community colleges and technical colleges..

With a now-open Nordic Skiing Center, a new Ariens headquarters and a health care partner, Brillion begins to make good on its ambitious reinvention plan
MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL

On a brisk winter morning in January, Mark Nemetz and Steve Peplinski strapped on their skis and headed out to train for this year's American Birkebeiner nordic ski race.

They'd driven to Brillion that morning from the Green Bay area. Never mind that grass was poking through a light snow cover and bare spots were visible along the road to the Ariens Nordic Center outside Brillion.

While other eastern Wisconsin's ski areas struggled with only a couple traces of snow on the ground after rain had washed away the early winter accumulation, the nordic center was open for business, offering 3.5 kilometers of trails covered with a base of up to 30 inches of man-made snow. The center, which opened in January, is the newest of only four nordic skiing locations in the state with snow-making equipment....

Mercury Marine earns 'zero waste to landfill' designation
NBC 26

FOND DU LAC — The Mercury Marine distribution center in Fond du Lac recently earned its “zero waste to landfill” designation with standards set by the U.S. Zero Waste Business Council.

While this doesn't mean the facility literally generates zero waste, it does mean that less than 10% of the waste generated ends up in landfills. The rest is recycled. The plant streamlined its recycling by dividing it into groups and placing drop boxes around the building, where it is then transported to a recycling plant....
