APPLETON – On Thursday, March 2, from 9 a.m-2 p.m. at Fox Valley Technical Collegein Room E130 (map), Pointters Community Initiatives (PCI) is hosting its Career Focus Program to help Black freshman and sophomore students in the Appleton Area School District see what career opportunities are available to them.

“It’s been proven over and over again that representation matters,” explained Oladimeji Tomori, founder and owner of Pointters Community Initiatives. “We are showing positions that are held by members of the Black community to more than 200 students. Door County municipalities making progress on broadband efforts
DOOR COUNTY DAILY NEWS

DOOR COUNTY -- From Washington Island to Forestville, municipality leaders are working to ensure you have better access to the internet in the future. Door County broadband coordinator Jessica Hatch updated the Door County Board on the progress made at Friday’s meeting. 

At the beginning of the process last April, it was determined that 1,574 miles of fiber are needed to wire the county with high-speed internet to over $130 million. The bulk of the fiber and investment is required for the county’s more rural areas. Hatch says its ongoing surveying of Door County residents shows the dire need for better, more reliable internet throughout the county...

“2022 was a year like no other in our history with respect to claims activity, said Garth Wicinsky, SECURA President & CEO. “We were hit with five major storms, doubling the number of claims we normally have. Through it all, our team delivered on the promise of taking care of our policyholders in their time of need. We could not be more proud of the service we delivered.”

Despite the adverse weather, SECURA grew direct written premium to $996 million, with agency partners producing $130 million in new business....

CAPP credits help Fond du Lac campus student reach STEM goals
UW OSHKOSH 

A University of Wisconsin Oshkosh student who jump-started his studies by taking college courses in high school, said he’ll earn his bachelor’s degree a lot sooner than the customary four-year path.

Luke Lowther of Oshkosh earned an astonishing 37 UW Oshkosh credits while a student at Oshkosh West High School, where he said there were plenty of Cooperative Academic Partnership Program (CAPP) courses available.

He is among the 6,200 students from 130 high schools in Wisconsin and two schools in Illinois who chose to take advantage of UWO’s CAPP offerings and get a head start on their dreams..

VITA works to improve tax literacy in a new way

GREEN BAY – By providing free tax assistance for the local community and invaluable volunteer experience for college students, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA) aims to improve tax literacy in a new way.

The VITA program, established by UW-Green Bay and now partnering with St. Norbert College, provides free tax preparation assistance to the local community with the help of IRS-certified college students.

According to Zhuoli Axelton, assistant professor of accounting at UW-Green Bay and the director of the program, its intended recipients are “low- and moderate-income taxpayers (i.e., taxpayers with $60,000 or less household income), the elderly, individuals with disabilities and limited English-speaking taxpayers.”...

Door County cheese is second-best in country, Kewaunee County cheese maker wins four classes

ASHWAUBENON - A Door County cheese was edged out of being named the best in the U.S., while a Kewaunee County cheese maker was a quadruple gold medal winner Thursday at the 2023 U.S. Championship Cheese Contest, which was held over three days at the Resch Expo near Green Bay.

The Vintage Cupola American Original Cheese made by the team at Door Artisan Cheese Co. in Egg Harbor was named first runner-up in the championship, scoring 98.613 points out of 100 in the final judging. The champion cheese is a Europa made by Arethusa Farm Dairy in Connecticut that scored 98.739. Door Artisan makes the Cupola line of cheeses for Red Barn Family Farms of Appleton, and they're available at the Door Artisan store and across the state....

Wisconsin Technology Council: Federal small business dollars will build on existing Wisconsin efforts
WISCONSIN TECHNOLOGY COUNCIL

MADISON – In Minnesota, about $97 million will be targeted to investments in early stage companies as well as loans and loan guarantees, all for small businesses.

Michigan will spread $237 million over direct equity-based capital investing as well as loans and loan guarantees, especially in manufacturing and technology industry sectors with the potential to create high-wage jobs.

Iowa will use its $96 million in four programs, including two venture capital funds, to invest in seed and early stage startups and to provide low-interest loans to similar young companies....
