Business recovery brightening but fragile: study
WLUK
OSHKOSH (WLUK) -- Large businesses are on their way toward pandemic recovery, while smaller businesses remain at risk.

That's according to the latest University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh COVID-19 economic impact study.

Brown County buffering on rural broadband need
Press Times
BROWN COUNTY – In November, Pieter deHart and his family moved a couple of miles south from New Franken to a home on Bellevue’s far-east side.

The only thing they didn’t bring with them was high-speed broadband.

“I talked to major providers and they said I’m too rural,” said deHart, the associate vice chancellor for Graduate Studies at UW-Green Bay. “Then, I spoke with small providers and they said I’m too urban.”

After the realization that high-speed internet was not available at their home, and the stark reality of everything being virtual due to the pandemic, the deHarts scrambled for options...

Seven-year fundraising campaign raises $232.6M for Lawrence University
WBAY
APPLETON, Wis. (WBAY) - Good things come to those who wait, and the wait for Lawrence University is over. After a 7-year fundraising campaign, the college in Appleton announced a total $232.6 million was contributed by more than 16,000 donors.

The goal of the “Be the Light!” campaign when it began was $220 million. The money will be used for scholarships, lowering student debt, improving and expanding academic programs offered at the liberal arts college, and updating existing facilities.

University president Mark Burstein is quoted on the university blog saying, “This campaign has touched every aspect of the Lawrence experience.... Scholarship, internships, religious and spiritual life, endowed faculty chairs, bricks and mortar projects, athletics. Bjorklunden (Lawrence’s campus in northern Door County). It’s just really touched every aspect of who we are and what we can offer to students...

Wisconsin Housing Market Picks Up In 2021 Where It Left Off Last Year
WPR
Wisconsin’s housing market is following last year’s record activity with strong January sales.

The latest report from the Wisconsin Realtors Association shows 4,659 sales of existing homes, up 9.8 percent from the figure in January 2020.

Interest rates have started to tick up slightly from last year’s record lows, but economist David Clark, of Marquette University, said that's not likely to have a major effect on the market.

The biggest challenge for Wisconsin real estate, he said, is the sharp decline in homes on the market.

"We’re down 35 percent from where we were this time last year," he said. "At some point, and especially as you move into those higher volume months, the number of homes that are available for sale just shrinks to the point where it’s going to start influencing significantly the number of closings...
