Flurry of business development: Two Rivers officials hope projects are more of a catalyst than a fluke

TWO RIVERS – The business landscape in Two Rivers has seen some significant changes as of late.

“We think they will be well-received and add to the beauty and the functionality of our downtown,” Two Rivers Community Development Director Elizabeth Runge said of the many positive endeavors going on right now.

Those behind the uptick in development are couples, Gina and Barry Krahn, and Curt and Jean Andrews, who have owned almost a dozen businesses between them.

The quartet of entrepreneurs – through Wine Not, LLC – said they hope their latest undertakings will help energize downtown Two Rivers.....

Its mission is to enhance the knowledge of appropriate sports training and sports-related injury risk, prevention and recovery through education, community involvement, and the publication and presentation of research..

That was until now. Odyssey Climbing + Fitness, located at 686 Mike McCarthy Way in Ashwaubenon – the only facility of its kind north of Milwaukee.

“There’s a handful of climbing facilities in both the Milwaukee and Madison areas, but that’s it,” Co-founder Sam Howard. “North of Milwaukee, there is nothing. Both Ben (Ganther) and I felt this was needed in Northeast Wisconsin.”...

GREEN BAY & DOOR COUNTY -- Two Northeast Wisconsin Boys & Girls Clubs are joining together to become one of the region's largest youth development agencies.

The Boys & Girls Club of Door County and the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Green Bay, which includes the Boys & Girls Club of Shawano, are uniting as one organization.

The merger will make both organizations stronger to support more than 3,000 youth and families annually....

ASHWAUBENON – Troy Dempsey, owner of The Heel Shoe Fitters, said he got his start in the shoe business in 1999 while looking for a summer job to support his ongoing degree in aviation maintenance.

Dempsey said he got a job at Trade Home Shoes, a national chain, where he worked for the next 10 years, climbing the company ladder.

“I found myself at a crossroads – continue there, or leave and do my own thing,” he said. “I made the decision to either start my own store or take over something that already existed.”....

MADISON — On the heels of his 2023 State of the State address announcement of more than $190 million in investments to bolster Wisconsin's workforce, Gov. Tony Evers and Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Amy Pechacek today announced a new "Winning with Wisconsin's Workforce" initiative to continue building on the administration's groundbreaking workforce development efforts. The initiative includes a statewide series of forums designed to highlight workforce development investments, available funding, resources to aid competitiveness, and local successes with worker recruitment and retention.

The free forums were organized by DWD, Wisconsin's regional Workforce Development Boards, and local partners. Employers, educators, community leaders, nonprofit service providers, and more are encouraged to attend.
