22 Insights for 2022: Northeast Wisconsin manufacturers double down in the new year
INSIGHT PUBLICATIONS

NEW NORTH -- For each of the last 12 years, the NEW Manufacturing Alliance’s Manufacturing Vitality Index has provided key insights that have guided the organization’s work and directed resources toward needs in the 18-county New North region. Working in partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Strategic Research Center, NEWMA’s 2022 study paints a picture of strong financial optimism tempered by significant workforce and supply chain challenges.

Both primary challenges are universal, particularly the supply chain issues spurred by the ongoing global pandemic. But NEWMA Executive Director Ann Franz says Northeast Wisconsin is as well-positioned as any region to tackle them....

Raising the wrap: Region's manufacturers offer innovative sustainable packaging
INSIGHT PUBLICATIONS

For Zack Leimkuehler, unboxing a package from an online retailer can lead to a sinking feeling.

“The worst thing I do is I open (a package) and see a box full of Styrofoam peanuts,” he says, adding that not only do they create a mess for consumers, but they also take up space in landfills and can take centuries to decompose.

Leimkuehler, vice president of the Technical Solutions Business Unit for Ahlstrom-Munksjö, envisions a future where consumers can open a box and throw all pieces of the packaging into the recycling bin. The company, which specializes in fiber-based materials solutions, aims to expand the boundaries of typical packaging and to find replacement solutions for all non-renewable elements...

'Home is here': Northeast Wisconsin's surge in diversity forged by opportunities, grit and an inclusive vision
GREEN BAY PRESS GAZETTE

Long Vue remembers eggs being splattered over his parents' car after he and his family arrived in Kaukauna in 1980. He recalls the vitriolic shouts from white residents telling them to go back to their homeland.

There was no homeland to return to for Hmong refugees. Vue's family fled Laos after his father and uncle were active in protecting communication towers used to direct U.S. planes dropping bombs on North Vietnam during the Vietnam War.

After 42 years of living in the Fox Valley, he said the eggs returned with renewed fury. Now 54 and executive director of NEW Hmong Professionals, Vue said former President Donald Trump's repeated use of the term "China virus" for the coronavirus fueled a rise of Asian American and Pacific Islander hate and scapegoating...

Law partners: Judge, college paving way for a new generation of lawyers
WBAY

DE PERE -- A local college is putting itself on the map as a starting point for up-and-coming lawyers, thanks in part to energetic faculty and a very passionate Brown County judge.

St. Norbert College in De Pere is a liberal arts school, well known for business and education, but it’s now starting to become known for pre-law as well.

“When I was, I don’t know, maybe fourth grade, I would come home every day and watch Judge Judy,” recalls Elizabeth Totzke. “And now I look back and I’m like, wow, that was all TV, but it honestly really got me thinking about it.”

Totzke’s childhood dream of becoming a lawyer is one step closer to reality now...

Packers home-field advantage means multi-million dollar boost for Greater Green Bay
NBC26

GREEN BAY — Only so many people can call the Green Bay Packers their neighbor. Patricia Blank is one of them.

Her property on Ridge Road serves mainly as a vacation rental. "It's her retirement income," said her son, Jonathan Blank.

"She gets a little Social Security, but nothing else really lined up for her."

The $5,500 her home is renting for this weekend during the Packers home playoffs game is part of an estimated $15 million of economic impact the game will have on the Greater Green Bay region.

That estimate is from Nick Meisner, vice president of marketing and communications for Discover Green Bay.
