'We shall overcome someday.' Brown County event commemorates MLK while many still wait for dream to come true.
GREEN BAY PRESS GAZETTE

GREEN BAY - Roeman Hamer stepped up to the podium at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, a red backdrop silhouetting a portrait of Martin Luther King Jr., and began to belt the hymn, "Lift Every Voice and Sing," a song that has become a soundtrack to a movement.

The song originated in Jacksonville, Florida, where a chorus of young Black men sang it in honor of Abraham Lincoln's birthday in 1900. The song has rippled as a liberating anthem, spreading across the nation and across generations, remaining solemn in its relevance, exquisite in its hope....

First in the state: Oneida Casino sports betting going well
PRESS TIMES

GREEN BAY – Chad Fuss, the Gaming Assistant-Chief Financial Officer for Oneida Casino, stepped out of his office at about 5 p.m. on the first Saturday of December when the college football conference championships were taking place.

Fuss was curious how the new sports betting area was being received.

He walked to the main floor and saw it bustling.

“I was back there (a few mornings later) at about 11 a.m., and it was almost as busy, which is a turn because our busier times are usually between 3 and 8 p.m., regardless of what’s going on,” Fuss said. “To see lots of individuals starting to watch games and get seats at 11 a.m. on a Sunday is good.”...

Winter Fleet gathering in Sturgeon Bay
WLUK

STURGEON BAY -- It's a busy time at Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay. As freighters dock, work gets underway.

On a very cold Sunday morning in the Sturgeon Bay Shipping Channel, the 680-foot-long John J. Boland creeps its way into place. Ice fishermen have front-row seats.

"It's pretty neat. I've done it a couple times. It's pretty cool to see, if you want to walk out there and look at it. You can feel the pressure change. It's pretty cool, a little scary I guess if you're not used to it," said Forest Jacobs, Sturgeon Bay.

Photographers follow the freighters on line and with their camera too...

New exhibit at University of Wisconsin-Green Bay wants people to rethink their biases
GREEN BAY PRESS GAZETTE

GREEN BAY – Stairs built without a plan for wheelchair accessibility. Soap dispenser sensors unable to recognize dark skin. Spiral notebooks that are harder for a left-handed writer to use.

Those are some of the implicit biases that a new exhibit at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is intended to show. The exhibition had its grand opening Friday.

"The Bias Inside Us" is an educational exhibit created by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service to help people realize and challenge their own implicit biases. It will be open to the public from Saturday until Feb. 13...

Inspiring engagement: Lakeshore FIRST Robotics expands its STEM outreach program
INSIGHT PUBLICATIONS

Since the organization’s inception in 2009, Lakeshore FIRST Robotics President Arrow Guetschow has devoted countless hours and seen scores of young people go through the program. For him, witnessing participants’ growth and transformation makes all the work worth it.

Guetschow has seen some remarkable success stories emerge from the program, including participants who have gone on to work for top companies around the world doing automation, engineering and machining work. It’s been equally gratifying for him to help students overcome tough circumstances, such as a young man who was at risk of failing to graduate but who later went on to a successful career in the construction industry thanks in part to the program....
