Mark Vandroff, a retired Navy captain and engineering duty officer, was installed last summer as CEO of Fincantieri Marinette Marine, shipbuilder of the U.S. Navy’s Freedom-class littoral combat ship and now the Constellation-class frigate. A former ship program manager, he brings extensive customer experience to his company.

Vandroff was interviewed by Senior Editor Richard R. Burgess. Excerpts follow.

With some experience now as a shipyard official, what has surprised or impressed you about being on this side of the shipbuilding equation?

St. Norbert college hires choua xiong as diversity teaching fellow
ST. NORBERT COLLEGE

Choua Xiong, who recently completed her Ph.D. dissertation at UW-Madison, will join St. Norbert College beginning in the spring semester as a post-doctoral diversity teaching fellow, the first position of its kind at St. Norbert.

“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Xiong to St. Norbert College,” said Jamie Lynch, co-chair of the selection committee, associate professor of sociology and director of the Strategic Research Institute at St. Norbert College. “Her commitment to understanding the challenges incoming students from diverse backgrounds face when entering higher education is directly connected to the mission of St. Norbert College. She also has the skills and experience to contribute to a unique pedagogical approach to the first-year experience,” Lynch said.

Ashwaubenon CDA approves land sale

ASHWAUBENON – A company interested in developing 8.596 acres for multi-family residential use on two parcels owned by the village’s Community Development Authority (CDA) offered to buy the property for $473,000.

The CDA agreed Tuesday, Jan. 4, to sell the parcels at 1580 W. Main Ave. and 1571 Cypress Road for that price to Alliance Maintenance, LLC, subject to rezoning from BP (Business Park) to R-3 (Multi-Family Residence), as well as site plan and design review approval and approval of a formal development agreement between the CDA and Alliance.

Community Development Director Aaron Schuette said Alliance operates a number of apartment complexes in Brown County, most notably the Howard Commons project near the YMCA in Howard and Crystal Lake in Bellevue...

Calumet County using ARPA funding to support child care programs

CALUMET COUNTY — Calumet County is allocating federal pandemic relief funds from the American Rescue Plan Act to address a lack of child care in the county due to staffing shortages. Officials say that improving access to child care will help alleviate staffing shortages for other employers.

“We know that there are employers throughout Calumet County that are struggling to hire and retain employees because those employees don’t have adequate child care,” said Community Economic Development Director Mary Kohrell. “If you’re trying to work and you don’t have family nearby, you literally have nothing to do with your children.”...

GREEN BAY – The Wisconsin Sustainable Business Council has named KI a GREEN MASTER LEVEL within its Green Masters Program. Recognizing sustainable actions by businesses from across the state of Wisconsin, the Green Masters program works to identify businesses that have taken at least one action within each of the nine pillars of sustainability. Participants in the program receive recognition for their sustainability accomplishments and develop ideas for future sustainability actions.

KI has made a comprehensive effort to incorporate sustainable practices and policies into its manufacturing responsibilities and continuously works toward incorporating the largest percentage of recycled content into its products and packaging. HOBART – EMT International was recognized Tuesday, January 4, by the Village Board for the support the business provided to local law enforcement during a domestic violence incident last month in Hobart.

The resolution approved by the board states that upon noticing the large response Dec. 15 from the Hobart-Lawrence Police Department, as well as other surrounding agencies, “Paul Rauscher, owner of EMT International, was quick to act and offered his business to law enforcement as a staging area and eventual command post, providing a warm and secure area…”
