Pupils debate climate change at mini COP29 event We hosted a mock COP29 summit bringing together 19 students and five teachers from across the county to debate climate policies and foster collaboration to discuss global climate action. These discussions and debates underscored the vital need for mutual respect, the exchange of diverse perspectives, and the power of collaborative effort. |

Main works starting on two new active travel schemes We have successfully secured £14.7m to upgrade active travel routes in Bedlington and between Corbridge and Hexham. Both routes will be a mix of shared pedestrian and cyclist use or segregated and some short paths will connect to the main routes. |

This month we are showcasing independent community energy projects across the county which can help Northumberland reach net zero. |

Humshaugh Community Solar Project – Invest in a Green Future Humshaugh Community Solar Ltd (HCSL) is developing a 1MW solar farm to generate local renewable energy, with profits supporting low-carbon initiatives in the community. The project is open for community share investment with an extended deadline of 31 May 2025

NCEL Solar-Powered Building Project Update The NCEL Solar-Powered Building Project helps community buildings reduce energy costs, carbon footprints, and increase resilience to climate change. NCEL handles installation and maintenance risks over a 20-year partnership. 2024 progress:
- NCEL plans to install solar PV and batteries in 11 buildings by year-end, with 70 more in various stages.
- A successful sharing event was held at Longhoughton Community Centre to showcase the system.

Borderlands Energy Investment Programme – Call for Projects The Borderlands Partnership is seeking projects for its Energy Investment Programme to support carbon reduction, job creation, and business growth in the region. Projects should seek at least £1.5m in funding, align with the Energy Investment Strategy, and be completed by December 2029.
Deadline: Expression of Interest forms must be submitted by 12 noon on Wednesday, 19 February 2025.
There is an online event to support the launch which will introduce the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal, the Call for Projects and includes a Q&A session.

Business with Purpose support programme available in NorthumberlandIf you run a purpose-led organisation that needs support to help grow or diversify its income streams, the North East BIC is offering an intensive support programme for you. Whether you’re currently too reliant on grants or you want to scale your operations, they can support you to increase your trading income.
You can access:
- Diagnostic meeting and action planning.
- Tailored 1-2-1 advice and guidance.
- Business development training and support.

Free One-to-One Support for Community Energy Groups The North East and Yorkshire Hub is offering free, one-hour sessions with consultants to support community energy groups and local authorities. Topics include:
- Net Zero Project Planning (Feb 4 & 5)
- Low Carbon Technologies (Feb 6 & 7)
- Governance & Procurement (Feb 10 & 11)
- Commercial Case Development (Feb 12 & 13)

Save the Date - CAN Energy & Renewables Online Roadshow Join CAN energy staff for a free one-hour session offering impartial advice on improving home heating efficiency, renewable technologies, and reducing carbon footprints. Our next Environment and Climate Change Fund is opening 22 January 2025... Up to £5,000 (minimum £250) will be available to community groups in Northumberland to support projects that help tackle climate change and protect, enhance and restore our environment. Guidance and T&Cs will be published online soon. |
