THE NEWSPAPER BOY

It would not be surprising if younger generations had never heard of a newspaper boy much less seen one given the current technology. Today, many people get their news from the internet and social media sites. But there was a time when the cry, "EXTRA, EXTRA - READ ALL  ABOUT IT !" (York, Pennsylvania - November 6, 1966) seen above meant that there was important breaking news. Note the newspaper girl on the opposite corner. People would pick up a copy of their local newspaper on the way to work. Below, a "Newspaper Boy"; Chicago (1938) stands under the El trying to catch customers taking the subway to work. This photo screams "Chicago" even without any accompanying description for those who can readily identify with the city. See more photos in our People collection.
