Subject: When Bad Things Happen to Good People...

Friend,

My heart is with you, if…

…you are one of the people affected by the hurricanes or forest fires, or are about to be hit by Typhoon Talim…

…or you live in a place where acts of terrorism are currently rearing up, like in the UK or Charlottesville, VA…

…or perhaps there is a natural disaster happening inside your family, or even inside your body.

When something bad happens to you, there is a tendency to take it personally, as if God or the Universe is punishing you, but the Divine is not vengeful, and it’s not personal.

Surely, if we find human acts of vengeance against our loved ones or neighbors to be abhorrent, then it stands to reason Divine Consciousness does not engage with us through vengeance.

The Divine is not singling us out for punishment. The notion of God punishing us is an old concept from our history, an attempt to explain the seemingly unexplainable bad events.

People were attempting to explain what their science could not yet explain, like the biological reasons behind a plague or the psychological reasons behind brutality.

What we tend to forget when we are in the midst of devastation is that we are endowed with free will.

That means sometimes we individually or collectively make decisions, intentionally or naively, that ultimately result in harm.

This includes hurricanes, tsunamis and forest fires. Humans have made decisions that have affected the earth, and we are seeing the results of those decisions.

It also includes seemingly incomprehensible acts of violence. We hold beliefs, cater to our deep emotional wounds, and make choices that reflect our woundedness.

These events are the results of cause and effect.

What we need to be asking is, "How did we let this happen?"

The same is true within our family interactions and the cells of our own bodies.

Sometimes it takes a while to understand the cause—the beliefs and emotional wounds—that set up the uncomfortable or even painful effect we are experiencing.

Once we see the cause and effect, we can move toward changing it, hopefully without needing to blame anyone, including ourselves.

Pain is a natural result of the friction that can occur in an ever expanding and contracting Universe, as we grow through our experiments and learning.
That’s why our compassion is so important. In compassion, we give ourselves the benefit of the doubt.

We recognize that getting to the root of a problem and collectively making the right changes requires insight and commitment.

Sounds a lot like healing, doesn’t it?

In order to find solutions, we need to get still, listen, and allow ourselves to be guided from a higher knowledge than the beliefs and emotional drivers that created the problems in the first place…

…and that stillness, listening and allowing are all qualities of our Sacred Feminine energy.

When bad things happen to good people, it’s time to open wide in compassion to perspectives that help us make necessary changes.

In that spirit, I’m delighted to share with you a powerful new song my wonderful husband, Jeff Burger, created called In the Streets of Charlottesville.

It’s a dynamic call to challenge the beliefs inside all of us that can lead to divisiveness, while opening to the kind of love that transforms hate.

You can listen to it here. It marks the debut of the Beliefs Project—Jeff’s and my invitation to answer the question, “What do we do when beliefs collide?”

I am a fountain of gratitude for Misa. Once a month, I have been receiving a deep Private Holding Session with her, which has been an extraordinary experience.
