Have you noticed that sometimes your empathy actually fools you?
Some years ago, I was facilitating an ancient ceremony for a lovely group of women.
The woman who hosted the ceremony was someone I had met earlier, and I had the impression she wanted to learn the ceremony to offer it locally.
At the end of our time in sacred circle, I invited anyone who wanted to learn the ceremony to talk with me afterwards. But our host did not express any interest.
I was a bit confused since I truly thought my intuition had led me to her, and her to me.

Another woman in the circle; however, came up to me while we were eating and socializing to let me know she would like to apprentice.
She spent years studying and eventually participated in more advanced practices with me.
She is a powerful, intuitive and wise woman whom I have come to love dearly.
Recently, she was recounting how we met, and said that when she asked to apprentice with me, I was disappointed in her.
All these years, she thought I was disappointed in her, when actually, I had been realizing I might have made an assumption about our host and disappointed in myself for assuming.
Our empathy can fool any of us.

When you are empathic, it is fairly easy to pick up someone else’s emotion, but the reasoning behind the emotion, or where it is being directed, is not always as easy to discern.
|
|
As soon as our conversation was over, I knew I wanted to share this story with you, because I’ve done this, too.
There have been times I thought I understood the feeling I was picking up from someone else, only to discover later that the feeling I sensed had little or nothing to do with me.
This recent interaction was an excellent reminder that empathy can give us a pulse on the feeling another person is having, but it is still wise to inquire about how or why they are experiencing that emotion.
Discovering what’s going on behind a feeling is just as important at the emotion itself.
Further, fulfilling your own, deep emotional needs, keeps your energy field clear.
If you are fulfilled, you are less likely to interpret emotions you are picking up as reflections of you.
