Do you ever feel like you don't belong?
You are not alone.
When I was young, I would adapt my own perceptions to fit with my family’s belief systems so I could feel like I belonged.
As I got to know myself better and understood my own beliefs and values, separate from my family, I would frequently feel like an alien when I went home for the holidays.
It’s not easy feeling different.

In counseling hundreds of people over the years, I’ve discovered it is actually quite common for people on dedicated spiritual journeys to feel like we don’t belong.
There are many reasons we might feel out of place, and there are a couple of themes I’ve seen surface repeatedly:
1. Prior to your birth, if your spirit travelled here from another star system or galaxy, you can feel completely out of place from the moment you land on Earth.
2. Once you arrive here or even later in your spiritual development, you might feel out of place because your values seem to be so different from the values of your family of origin, or even from most humans.
It’s a strange feeling and it takes some focused attention to find your ease with the world you find yourself in.

Consider some of our planet’s greatest spiritual leaders. Can you imagine how out of place they felt, either from the time they arrived here, or as they awakened spiritually?
And yet, though those beautiful spiritual leaders may have felt out of sync with the rest of us, thank goodness they continued to help us find our way to Divine consciousness and love.
Isn’t it possible that this is true for you and me too?

If we are willing to reframe our feeling of “not belonging,” we can quickly discover we very much belong because the perceptions we are blessed to carry are the very perceptions needed on this wonderful earth.
During the holidays, I invite you to reflect on the spiritual leaders that have influenced your life.
Then ask yourself how you are being asked to be of service with the unique perspectives you hold.
