"Red Shirt" Corner

Russ Matthys is a STEMLink and Creativity Festival presenter, Future City Competition mentor, professional engineer, and a wonderful advocate for Twin Cities students. Russ says, "The programs I'm involved with that SBC sponsors are promoting my profession and allowing me to connect with the students in ways that help them discover a career that they may truly enjoy while they help make the world a better place. I do a lot of professional outreach and am aware of no programs that do a better job of helping the students discover the world of engineering."

One of Russ' favorite SBC memories is a parent thanking him for the impact he had had on her son as a Future City Competition mentor, "I was amazed at the student's enthusiastic response to my sharing about engineering. We worked together the following year to a much greater extent and I was fortunate to watch this student and his teammates compete at the national level."

According to Russ, "SBC is a great organization with great leadership and, like similar organizations, needs great volunteers in order to be truly successful... Great volunteers aren't necessarily experts or even experienced at volunteering, they just need to want to make a positive impact in the lives of others." We could not agree more!

To nominate an SBC Red Shirt to be featured in the Red Shirt corner, please email
Betsy Narr.
Thanks to you, SBC raised 99 $25s on Give to the Max Day!
That's $2,475.00 for Twin City students!

SBC's goal is to keep costs to schools down while keeping the quality of our venues, session content, and expectation of the program high. We can't do that without your help. Your donations have helped offset presenter costs, session supply costs, and they keep registration fees for schools, educators, and students low.
