Action Alert: Act Now for Greater Access to Locally Raised Eggs in Texas!
Hearing May 13!

Strength in Numbers

Dear Friend,

Our friends at the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance have been working hard on a number of bills that support small producers in Texas and seek to expand their freedoms.

They have alerted us to an important bill regarding egg sales that will be presented at a hearing next week. As we all know, egg prices are skyrocketing, and locally raised eggs are in high demand, but current regulations are preventing greater access to locally raised eggs. FARFA has explained the following, and we encourage Texas members and readers to take action! To see the FARFA alert please click here.

Texas SB 1864 would allow farmers to sell ungraded eggs to restaurants and grocers (who could then sell them to consumers). The bill has already passed the Senate and is now in the House where a key hearing will be held before the TX House Agriculture Committee on Tuesday, May 13.

Presently, unless eggs are “graded,” Texas farmers are not allowed to sell their eggs to restaurants or grocers. Grading eggs involves weighing and measuring each egg, sorting them by size, obtaining a license from the Texas Department of Agriculture, and paying fees. What grading does NOT do is provide any health or food safety benefits.

Grading prevents small farmers from being able to sell their eggs to the co-ops, small grocers, and local-sourcing restaurants, where consumers want these eggs.

TAKE ACTION

Action Step #1

Submit online comments to the committee. Go to House Public Comment, fill out your information, click the arrow for Bills and Topics, and then scroll down to Agriculture on May 13, and select SB 1864 by Johnson.

Submit your statement on why this matters to you, your family, your community and producers and consumers throughout Texas. Ask the legislators to support SB 1864 and tell them why this matters to you.

Action Step #2

Call your state representative and urge them to co-author SB 1864.  You can find your representative here.

Sample script: "Hi, my name is ___ and I am a constituent living in [town].  I am calling to ask my representative to co-author a great bill: SB 1864.  This bill is scheduled for a House Agriculture Committee hearing May 13. Farmers and consumers want to see locally raised eggs in their local grocers and restaurants, without the barrier created by a grading license. The bill helps small farmers better provide healthy food for our community."

Share why this matters to YOU -- your story on egg availability -- in a few sentences.  Keep it short, but personal!

Action Step #3

Spread the word! Send this Action Alert email to your friends, families, and customer list. We need your help to move this bill forward and we thank you for your partnership!

TALKING POINTS

1. Passage of SB 1864 would enable family farmers to sell ungraded eggs of all kinds to restaurants and grocers.

2. Farmers are already allowed to sell ungraded eggs directly to consumers, with no reported problems, so this increases access by allowing sales to restaurants and retailers who can then sell them to consumers!

3. Passage of the SB 1864 would enable family farmers to make a better living.

4. SB 1864 would increase consumer freedom of choice by allowing them to choose from a greater array of convenient locations from which to buy their locally raised eggs.

5. SB 1864 would keep more food dollars in local communities by increasing locally-produced foods consumers can obtain.

Taking action serves to increase #foodfreedom!
