Action Alert – Tell the Senate

to Act on the Farm Bill!

Dear friend,

As we reported in our recent newsletter, the Senate Ag Committee failed to advance its version of the Farm Bill in a committee markup last month (see the Committee's Agricultural Act of 2026 here).

The extension on the current 2018 Farm Bill runs through the end of September, so time is running out for the House and Senate to reach a compromise before funding expires. Congress is currently in recess but will be back in DC soon, and we expect the Senate Ag Committee to conduct another review of the Farm Bill mid-September.

This means you have an opportunity now to make your voices heard while your representatives are still home in your communities by calling and emailing their in-state offices, attending public events where they will be present, and even trying to get a meeting at their local offices before they leave for Washington.

Meat Processing Bills

The portions of the Farm Bill we have been following most closely, the LOCAL Foods Act (seeking clarification regarding on-farm slaughter rules) and the PRIME Act (which seeks to allow in-state sales of meat slaughtered at custom-exempt facilities), are both in limbo. Although the House draft included a pilot program for the PRIME Act and an amendment adding the LOCAL Foods Act was introduced before the Senate markup session, neither progressed past the Senate committee’s session.

We did get some good news that an additional co-sponsor of the PRIME Act was added just this week – Representative Tony Wied of Wisconsin. It’s very encouraging to see that support for these efforts continues to grow, which is why it’s important to keep up the pressure and let your representatives know why these acts, and the Farm Bill as a whole, are important to you, your families, and your communities.

See below for more info on how to take action!

Action Step 1

Contact your Senators and members of the Senate Ag Committee and tell them you support passage of the Farm Bill, and that you want to see progress on the PRIME Act and the LOCAL Foods Act, both of which seek to give local producers greater access to meat processing options that will help them grow and thrive.

You can find your senators and their contact information by clicking on the button below.

Action Step 2

Spread the word! Send this Action Alert email to your friends, family, and customer list.

In good health,
