Subject: The Politically Neutral Dojo...

Friend,

Moral outrage seems to be everybody's new side hustle lately. Only problem with it is, it doesn't pay very well.

In fact, it might just cost you business.

But everyone has a stump to stand on today, what with social media being what it is. So, they climb up on it every day and express their opinions on every issue under the sun.

This is all well and good, if you can separate your politics from your business.

Unfortunately, everyone knows everything about everybody else these days. And chances are good that your clients will friend and follow you on social media.

Look, I've tried to keep my personal social media accounts separate from my business social media accounts for years, and the fact is it doesn't work. No matter how hard I try to keep things separate, folks track me down and friend me on my personal social media accounts.

I even warn people when they friend me that I share a lot of controversial items on my feed. "Oh, that's okay," they say. "I do too!"

Then, I end up in an argument over something stupid with someone who was a customer, and they stop buying my stuff or they suddenly find a reason to stop being my student. But of course, it wasn't what I was posting on social media.

No, couldn't be that. Had to be something else.

Look, I get it. There's a lot of messed up stuff going on in the world today. And, there's a lot to be upset about.

The only problem is that people are being divided down very particular political, economical, and social lines right now, for various reasons that all have to do with profit and power.

So, your clients hear negative crap all day long. They see people arguing about stupid crap on social media from the time they get up in the morning, to the time they go to bed at night. They hear it on the radio, they see it on news sites and blogs, and they see it on TV.

The constant arguing and bullshit is inescapable now. So, they're just tuning it all out at this point.

And because of that, if you're just one more bickering voice among the sea of bickering voices that they hear every day you're just going to get tuned out like the rest of them.

So, it's in your best interest to NOT be just another bickering voice on social media. Stop posting political articles and arguing about your pet issues. Stop expressing your moral outrage online, whether it's right, left, or center.

Stop being part of the crowd.

Instead, make a commitment to be a positive voice among a sea of negativity. Start posting ideas, articles, quotes, and stories that inspire people.

Trust me, you are not going to change anyone's political party on Facebook. But, you can help change their day by making them smile and giving them hope.

And the bottom line is, nobody really gives a damn what you think about politics.

But they do care about whether you care about them. So, show them you care about them more than you care about being right.

It'll make you stand out like a beacon in a sea of negative chatter, and it will set you apart from all the other martial arts instructors who are too busy telling people what they think instead of showing them how much they care.

Until next time,

P.S. - I'm done arguing about politics online. It's a waste of time, and nothing I say is going to change anyone's mind anyway. So, if you've happened to follow me on any of my personal social media accounts, sorry if I don't comment on your political posts anymore. But, it's high time I took my own advice and stayed out of that crap.
