The hardest thing to hear when your business is struggling is that it's your fault.
I know it was hard for me to hear, back when the Great Recession hit. But it was the truth.
And I didn't need anyone to tell me that -- I was looking in the mirror when I spoke those words.
"Massie, this is your own damned fault. This time, you got cocky and didn't take your own advice. And look where it got you."
That was a hard lesson to learn, and it took me well over a year to pull my school back from the brink of failure. All because I thought the rules of business didn't apply to me.
But it was a valuable lesson to learn, too.
