Subject: Interesting Developments At Gracie University...

Friend,

This is a really interesting video put out by the Gracie Breakdown guys (Ryron and Rener, along with their uncle Rickson and Pedro Sauer) about changes they're implementing at Gracie U.

Regardless of your opinions on Gracie U (although I think every BJJ instructor I know is glad they're not awarding online blue belts anymore), there are some really interesting topics discussed in this video:

1. Whether or not most students are interested in competition, and whether or not competitions and tournaments hurt your student retention or help it.

2. The value of teaching people self-defense techniques as part of the beginner jiu-jitsu curriculum.

3. Student retention during those first few months when white belts are getting smashed by everyone else in class.

I'd like to hear what you think about these three topics (and about the announcement regarding no more online blue belts at Gracie U).

Let me know what you think on the MABD Facebook page at:

P.S. - I hate seeing good instructors struggle financially. I've helped several BJJ instructors grow their schools, and I can tell you that student retention is a universal challenge for jiu-jitsu school owners... much more so than with other styles.

Naturally, some BJJ schools do much better in areas like student retention than others. But why is that?

It's easy to assume that successful BJJ schools are teaching watered-down BJJ, and it's also easy to assume that's why they're successful. But if you're struggling to retain students, you might want to look at what those schools are doing while setting your personal bias aside. Doing so could very well mark a turning point in your business. Just some food for thought.
