Subject: How To Cut The Time It Takes To Grow A Dojo In Half...

Friend,

Yesterday I wrote about how implementation is the key to success in starting and running a martial art school. Those who implement, succeed.

But how can you 10x those results, and speed up the process of starting and growing a successful dojo?

And, how can you avoid implementing ideas that aren't right for your school?

Three ways:
  1. You have to avoid implementing useless information -
  2. You have to avoid implementing superfluous strategies -
  3. And, you have to avoid implementing information in the wrong sequence -
Let me explain what I mean, starting with useless information. Remember on Monday how I talked about the merchants of bullshit? Yeah, those folks. Well, they are great at selling you on useless and superfluous ideas and information.

A lot of it they just pull out of thin air (my dad would say they pull it out of their rear), because when you're selling people information, and you don't know what the heck you're talking about, you make things up.

You think I'm kidding, or exaggerating. I'm not. I know this because I spent a lot of my own money separating the B.S. from the good stuff when I first started out in this industry.

So, a big part of your success -- and the SPEED of your success -- will hinge on avoiding information that doesn't work or that you don't need.

And, there's a lot of it out there. A LOT. I have school owners come to me all the time who are frankly quite jaded and skeptical, because the merchants of B.S. got to them before I did.

At least once a month, I'll get an email from someone that goes something like this:

"Hi Mr. Massie, I just wanted to let you know that I'm trying your stuff because (nothing else worked/I'm at my wits end/I've tried everyone else and they suck, so I want to see if you suck too). I heard about you from a friend, and decided to give your stuff a shot, but honestly, I'm skeptical after ___ years in this industry. Can you tell my why your stuff is (different/better) than all the other stuff out there on running a dojo?"

Seriously, that's pretty much the gist of a lot of the emails I get. Now, what does that tell you about our industry?

It tells me a lot.

One, that there are people out there presenting themselves as subject matter experts, who aren't. Two, that there's a lot of information floating around in the industry about how to run a successful school that is either superfluous or just plain wrong. And three, that a lot of you are falling prey to bad info and dishonest people.

It makes me angry. It really, really does. Because, I've been in your shoes. I mean, this is your LIFE and LIVELIHOOD that people are messing with. You don't jack with another person's ability to provide for their families, and especially not for your own profit. That's lower than low.

So, to recap... if you want to speed up the process of starting and growing a successful dojo, you have to implement what you learn, and you have to avoid implementing the wrong info.

Also, you need to implement info in the right sequence, and I'm going to talk about that tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Until next time,

Mike Massie

P.S. - Again, not everyone in this industry is out to fool you. But based on what I see and what I have to help school owners straighten out in their businesses, a lot of the people who are telling school owners how to run successful schools are clueless.

P.S.S. - Or, maybe I'm wrong -- maybe the people who come to me for advice and guidance just didn't listen, or they misinterpreted the info they received. Who knows? Regardless, I still think you need to carefully weigh the info you get against common sense, and you need to look at whether that information has worked for other school owners in a variety of situations over an extended period of time.
