If you have a website, and you should, it's important to keep track of the technology you use and what you pay to use it. Why? I recently received a domain name expiration notice in the mail from a company called iDNS, a company I would never do business with after receiving this mailer. I currently have lyricwell.com registered through NameCheap, one of several good domain registration companies. The letter, while the content was true, used language that made it seem like I need to renew right now or bad things would happen. I could renew now using iDNS to take advantage of their best savings. A 1 year renewal was $45 or their best value, a 5 year renewal for $180. I decided to check what I pay for a 1 year renewal and could pay for a 5 year, which I knew was much less. Currently through NameCheap, a 1 year renewal is $13.16 and a 5 year is $63.80. I can't imagine paying the iDNS price!
The fact that I received the mailer means that it must be working for them. They get enough new signups by sending out mail to make it worth their time and money. That's why it's important to know what you pay for technology and whether switching companies is worth it, or work with a reputable company that you can ask when you get a mailer like the one I received.
