The white horses of southern France

I made a trip last month to photograph the white Camargue horses of southern France. They are owned by farmers but are semi-wild, they roam vast areas and find their own food. They don't hang out in corrals or live in barns like the way we think most horses do. Since the weather is temperate all year, they don't need the shelter or feed like other horses. The Camargue region is mostly salt water marshes and the horses have adapted to their surroundings.

The white horses are beautiful, they have flowing manes and the light of southern France makes them glow. They are managed by France's version of cowboys know as Guardians. The Guardians have learned that one way to make money with the horses is to take them through the marshes and Mediterranean Sea surf for photographers. I'll be leading a workshop there in 2027, let me know if you are interested. You can read more about the horses and see lots more photos in my online journal at https://www.lorenphotos.com/gallery/blog-white-horses/
I found a great place in Spain for the 2026 eclipse
After photographing the horses in France I went over to Spain to scout locations for the August 2026 total solar eclipse. Since I now count myself as an eclipse chaser I wanted to find a great place for eclipse that will be crossing Iceland and Spain. I've been to the area of Iceland where the eclipse will be many times and know it extremely well. It would be a wonderful place to take in the eclipse but the odds of clouds there are very high. So I'm going to base a workshop in Zaragoza, Spain, (above) which is a dry climate and gives us the best odds of clear skies. As a bonus it is also in one of the darkest areas of Europe so we'll be able to do nighttime shooting of the Milky Way with some unique locations - think old Roman and Medieval ruins. I'm still working on details and will keep the group small, so let me know if you are interested. I wrote about it in my online journal at https://www.lorenphotos.com/gallery/looking-for-eclipse-sites-in-spain/
Space available for Cuba trip
I have a couple of openings for my Cuba workshop Feb. 23 to March 2. We have an exciting trip planned with some special locations that our local guide has found for us. We'll go some of the typical places, like old town Havana and the Malecon along the ocean along with the unique locations where few outsiders photograph that make this trip special.

I fear that travel restrictions to Cuba may get tighter with the new U.S. administration, so this might be the last chance to go for a while. You can get more info about the workshop at
at https://www.lorenphotos.com/product/cuba-photography-workshop/. I'm only taking six people so let me know if you would like to go, it will be a special week.
More birds to be photographed in Florida
I spent three weeks of November in Florida, mostly relaxing but also doing some final checks for my Florida Spring Bird Photography Workshop. My original plan was to spend most of our time on the east coast and a couple of days on the west coast. The hurricanes earlier this year changed that. Several of the locations I go to on Gulf coast have again been devastated so I'm changing plans and staying on the Atlantic side of the state. Some of my favorite critters to photograph in Florida are the burrowing owls. They are small, only about six inches tall, and live in burrows. They come out during the day, most of the time to check the scenery. Hey, why live in Florida and spend most of your day underground? The largest concentration is on the west coast, which is the main reason I go over there. I dug deeper, that's a burrowing owl joke, and found a concentration of them on the eastern side of the state not too far from a couple of my other favorite locations. So even though the itinerary has changed we'll still get the cute little owls with yellow eyes. I still have openings so be sure to join me March 30 to April 4.
