Icelandic adventure

Every trip to Iceland has special adventures and my August workshop was no exception. I was hobbling around on crutches after breaking my ankle in June when I crashed my bicycle in Vermont. Fortunately I had previously arranged to have friend and great photographer Brian Horton join me on the trip as my side kick. I could drive us to all the fun locations I’ve found in Iceland and since Brian had been to Iceland with me twice before he could walk people the final steps when I couldn’t get there. He was great helping people find the right shots and any technical help they needed. I tried to get around the best I could but spent a lot of time in parking lots making pictures from there or flying my drone.

One of my favorite places is Diamond Beach where chunks of glacial ice wash up on a black sand beach. The light coming through the ice is stunning, thus the diamond reference, and it is fun to see the waves bounce the ice around on the beach. Every time there is different, sometimes the ice chunks are small and other times they are big. From the parking lot this time it looked like there weren’t going to many but I knew when we got to the water’s edge there could be diamonds floating around.

I had pretty much worn out the rubber tips on my crutches walking on sand and stones before we got to Diamond Beach. So I cut up a couple of small water bottles and gaffer taped them the end of my crutches. It provided a larger surface to be able to walk on the sand. It worked pretty good, I made my way across the beach and was able to help people make some fun photos. The trick is to get down low with a wide angle lens as the water rushes around the ice chunks. I wasn’t stable enough to make any photos, which was fine, I’ve done it many times before.

Once we got back to Reykjavik to end the trip I was able to find a store that had new tips for my crutches. The water bottles were great on sand but rather slick on a regular floor. I'm just happy I got to see scenes like the church on the hill from parking lots.

Let's go to Florida in March!
Last month’s newsletter teased that I may be doing a Florida workshop in March. Well, it’s on! I’ll be joined by professional photographer Brian Horton, who photographs birds nearly every day. We’ll start on the east coast in West Palm Beach where we will visit a couple of exciting and easy to access rookery breeding grounds and photograph birds strutting their amazing breeding plumage. We’ll wander across the Everglades photographing gators and more herons, egrets and cormorants and then over to the Ft. Meyers area for more birds including the fun burrowing owls. It will be a exciting, memorable trip with Loren and Brian making sure you get some photos of a lifetime. https://lorenphotos.com/product/florida-spring-workshop/
VT Fall Foliage Workshop openings

Fall foliage season is almost here and this year it also the season for cancellations. My first workshop was sold out in December so I added a second session the following week. I’ve had a slew of cancellations for many different reasons, so I now have two openings the first week and three the second. If you haven’t photographed fall foliage in Vermont, it is a special thing to do. For more info and to register, go to these links. Vermont Fall Foliage Workshop Oct. 2-6. Second session Oct 10-14

Printing Your Photos Master Workshop
When you get that killer shot that deserves to go on the wall you want to make sure you bring everything out of the print that you can. High end print professionals go beyond global adjustments and work on fine details that can be subtle but will make the ultimate print shine. Starting Oct. 19, I'll show you how to get the most out of your file. It is in intimate online workshop where we have two group sessions and then a one-on-one session where we work on your image. You then get a 24X36 inch print of that image. Click here to learn more.
Winter in Iceland
Speaking of Iceland, I’m taking another group in February to photograph this unique place. Winter may be my favorite time to be there, although I do love summer too. But in winter there is one thing that is hard to find in other places: ice caves. During the summer the glaciers naturally melt and create rivers through the ice. In winter the rivers stop leaving marvelous caves. When light comes through the glacial ice into the cave it is blue from the density of the ice pack. We go with a local guide, riding in a big ass four wheel drive truck back to the glacier and then walk to where the guides have found an opening. I get a guide that takes us before sunrise so we are at the cave as the sun is first coming up. It is a wonderful time to be there and the other tourists don’t come until later. If that isn’t exciting enough we also chase the Aurora Borealis in the winter. Seeing the dancing lights in the sky is always a great pleasure. And since we stick to the southern coast of Iceland the temperature is usually warmer than in New York City. The gulf stream flows up and it rarely gets into the teens at night and is in the lower 30s during the day. I hope you can join me if you haven’t already. https://lorenphotos.com/product/iceland-winter-photography-workshop/

Acadia National Park, here we come again
The perfect location for a photography workshop is Acadia National Park in Maine. Acadia is a special place, the unique rocky shore, Cadillac Mountain, pristine ponds, old buggy trails and beauty everywhere you look. It is a favorite place for photographers and tourists, so we’ll go before the summer crowds arrive. We'll be based in Bar Harbor and making daily journeys into the park including lighting up Bass Harbor lighthouse. Join me June 3-7. Click here for more info
