Goodbye dear friend I didn't get my January newsletter out on time because my wife Robin and I are heartbroken that our sweet Bernese Mountain Dog Sophie suddenly got sick in late January and was gone nine days later. She was the most fun, energetic and exuberant pooch a person could want. She was eight and acted like she was going on two. She always greeted us at the door and never walked, she bounded. We miss her. Read more about Sophie on my blog post.

| | | My favorite photos from 2016 Yea, I know, the New Year was a long time ago, but this is my first newsletter of the year so you my not have seen my favorite photos from last year. I went to Guatemala, Italy, California, Florida and about 15 other states by my absolute favorite photo is from near my home in Vermont. I used a technique called light painting to illuminate an island with my big flashlight from 300 yards away. I was lucky and got a shooting star in the shot. See 52 of my 2016 favorites.

| Still some openings for workshops in Oregon, Provence and Vermont
|
| | I'm really excited about my destination photography workshops this summer in Oregon and Provence, France. I'm working with photographer Ron Lake as we explore the beauty and color of Provence, France. Read more about the Provence workshop. He is taking us to great locations, like the one in his photo above, that you just can't find unless you've been there many times, like Ron.
After France I'm leading a workshop in Oregon that ends with the total eclipse of the sun. I did a ton of research to determine where the least likely place along the path of the eclipse would be for clouds that day and it is the high desert of eastern Oregon. So that is where we are going! We'll start the workshop at the ocean for a couple of days and then head inland. It will be a special adventure. Read more about the workshop.
Of course, I'll be having my annual Vermont Fall Foliage Photography Workshop, from Oct. 9-13. October is a special time of year in Vermont and this workshop always sells out, so don't hesitate.
I'm hosting many local workshops in Somerville, NJ, like Beyond the Basics, Black & White and night photography. I also am doing a special workshop in New York City, Expanding Your Vision, where we'll spend the March 25th concentrating only on seeing. I have rented an office we will work from and then get out and shoot in the city. It will be a special day. Keep up with all of my workshops at www.LorenPhotos.com/workshops

| | Heading back to Florida for more art shows I have two more shows in Florida before the northern art show season starts again. It is hard to be away from home for so long and I'm too fond of doing it. I'll be glad to get back to weekend trips and working from my home in New Jersey or Vermont. Keep track of my schedule on my website, wwwLorenPhotos.com.

| | Macro workshops were lots of fun
|
| | I had two macro photography workshops in January and they were lots of fun. I set up five studios in my office and we photographed different things up close, like the oil in water above. I had so much fun I'll do the workshop again in the fall.

| | Greenery is the 2017 color of the year
|
| | I don't know how they decide this but Pantone has declared that Greenery is the color of the year for 2017. I guess they look at trends in decorating and see what is going on, so if you want to keep up with the latest style trends, think green this year. And it isn't just any green, it is a bright green, which I like. Read more on my blog.

Thinking Black & White
My early photography career was as a newspaper photographer. This was before USA Today came around and everybody started using color photos. I was a Black & White photographer and probably didn't shoot 200 color photos for the first five years of my career. Making Black & White photos is different than color, it requires a different thought process. Graphic elements are much more important as well as composition and balance. When I see a scene like the one above from my Guatemala workshop last year, I'm concentrating on how the gray tones will come together in the background and work with the people in the boat. I'll be hosting a Black & White Photography Workshop April 1. It is fun to get back to my roots. |
