Print of the Month - Banyon Path
|
| | I've been concentrating on photographing trees lately so I sought out some banyan trees while in Florida earlier this month and found these near Hobe Sound on the east coast. I love the way they feel like an ancient entrance to another world. Read More... |
| | Looking forward to winter art shows in Florida I spent a couple of weeks in Florida earlier this month at two art shows in Pensacola and Plantation, which aren't near each other at all! I transport all my art work and my 10'X20' booth in a trailer, so I needed to drive there and figure out some logistics, like where to store the trailer all winter. I did get out and shoot plenty of pictures, like the palm leaf above. I ended up driving over 4,000 in two weeks. I'll drive down again after Christmas and leave my Explorer there and fly back for a couple of stints in NJ and Vermont. Keep track of my schedule on my website, www.LorenPhotos.com.

| | Vermont Winter Workshop is coming in Feb.
|
| | Since I'm spending so much time in Florida this winter, I'm really looking forward to my Vermont Winter Wonderland Photography Workshop Feb. 3-5. The snow really simplifies the landscape and makes everything look clean and fresh. It will be a harsh change from shooting on the beach but I love the feel of working in the chill and then getting back indoors and knowing I mastered the elements. Read more about the workshop.

| | Loving a big full moon I was already doing too much driving on my Florida trip so I decided to go out of my way coming back north and stop in Charleston, SC. Since it was on the night when the full moon would be closest to the earth for 35 years, I did some research before I got there to figure out where to go.
I started with Google maps to find a cool place to shoot, I was looking for a pier and found a nice one on Folly Beach. Then I used an app called Photographer's Emphemeris that showed me exactly where I needed to be to get the rising moon over the pier. It is amazing I can know where to go without having been there before. Read more on my blog post.

| | Remembering a unique experience I came across an old photo that is one of my favorite stories. I made the picture while in South Korea working for the Associate Press during the 1988 Olympics. One day I ventured out on the subway and wandered around a neighborhood, no idea where I was or where I was going. Two kids were coming home from school and were walking on the other side of the street. They giggled and pointed at the big American so I waved. They waved back and we kept walking. It went that way for several blocks and then they disappeared. I was thinking how cool my encounter was when they showed up with three ice cream cones, two for them and one for me. We laughed as we ate them and I motioned that I wanted to make a picture of them. I wish I would have been able to send them a copy. Read more on my blog.

| | Full schedule of workshops coming up
|
| | I'm planning 30 art shows and about that many workshops for 2017. I'll be teaching fun things like Getting to Know Your Camera Better, Black & White, night photography, macro photography, composition, mostly in Somerville, NJ. Plus I have my destination workshops in Vermont, Oregon and Provence, France. I'm working with photographer Ron Lake as we explore the beauty and color of Provence, France. Read more about the Provence workshop.
After France I'm leading a workshop in Oregon that ends with the total eclipse of the sun. I did a ton of research to determine where the least likely place along the path of the eclipse would be for clouds that day and it is the high desert of eastern Oregon. So that is where we are going! We'll start the workshop at the ocean for a couple of days and then head inland. It will be a special adventure. Read more about the workshop.
Of course, I'll be having my annual Vermont Fall Foliage Photography Workshop, from Oct. 9-13. Keep up with all of my workshops at www.LorenPhotos.com/workshops

Photographing the snow
One of the hardest things to do with your camera is get a proper exposure of snow. A camera always thinks the scene should be darker than it is. The reason is rather boring, but if you try photographing snow scenes, you'll quickly know what I mean. So we have to tell the camera that we want the image to be brighter than what it thinks it should be. That means overexposing the photo, which is the opposite of what you think you should be doing in the snow. But there is something even more important I have learned while out photographing in sub-zero Vermont winters. You need to stay warm. No matter what else is going on, if you are cold, and especially your hands and feet, you are going to be thinking more about heat than making great photos. I get cold fairly easily, but I am rarely cold when I am out shooting because I plan ahead and know how to stay warm. It is fun beating the elements and making special photos when everybody else is huddled inside. These are just a few of the things I share in my Vermont Winter Wonderland Photography Workshop in Feb. |
