Print of the Month - Glowing Island
|
| | At Chittenden Reservoir in Vermont there is a pretty little island about 300 yards off shore. It is a favorite place for photographers and I’vephotographed it on many occasions at different times of day and different seasons. I decided to try it at night and use a large flashlight to illuminate the island using a technique called light painting, where you pass the light over the subject many times during a long exposure, I usually do 30 seconds. There was only a slight breeze which gave me the nice reflection on the water. Then I was lucky to have a shooting star which gave me a beautiful final touch.

| | Vermont is always pretty but in fall it is stunning
|
| | I just finished my annual Vermont Fall Foliage Photography Workshop, which is based at my house in Woodstock, VT. The dry and hot weather this summer pushed the peak color back at least two weeks, but we were still able to find plenty of beauty as we traveled around the state. I loved the scene along the famous Rt. 100 with an old barn and fall colors filling the hill behind it.

| | A great way to end summer art shows My last art show for the summer was this month in Montclair, NJ, but the weekend before I had a tremendous show in Stowe, VT. I sold a lot but it was fun commuting to Stowe from Woodstock and watching the beauty as I drove. It finally got to me as I was cruising I-89 and I had to stop and shoot one of Vermont's favorite mountains, Camel's Hump, as it jutted up behind a hillside of foliage. My winter season begins this weekend in Florida, I'm doing two shows in November, five in January and then back for three more in February and March. Keep track of my schedule on my website, wwwLorenPhotos.com.

| | Exciting adventures next summer
|
| I have two exciting photography workshops coming up next summer. Once again I'm working with photographer Ron Lake as we explore the beauty and color of Provence, France. Ron has spent a ton of time in Provence and his photo of an abbey surrounded by lavender (above) is cherished by collectors. Read more about the workshop.
After France I'm leading a workshop in Oregon that ends with the total eclipse of the sun. I did a ton of research to determine where the least likely place along the path of the eclipse would be for clouds that day and it is the high desert of eastern Oregon. So that is where we are going! We'll start the workshop at the ocean for a couple of days and then head inland. It will be a special adventure. Read more about the workshop.
Of course, I'll be having my Vermont Fall Foliage Photography Workshop, but it will be a week later in 2017, from Oct. 9-13, so we hopefully hit peak foliage.

 | What is it that moves you? I hear many comments from people looking at my photos and saying they love what I have captured but they say if they were there they probably wouldn't have taken a picture of the scene the way I did, if they would have photographed it at all. Making pictures is much more than learning the technical functions of the camera or the rules of composition, it is about being able to express yourself. Great pictures come from the heart, not the mind. I'll go to the same place numerous times and the photos look different after each outing. Part of it is the weather and the light, but it really comes down to how I am able to feel what I am seeing and how I am able to allow myself to be emotionally moved by the scene. I can't tell you how many times I've been in this grove of birch trees, sometimes I leave without making a picture and other times I am able to record the beauty of the trees. When you come down to it, beautiful photography is about being able to appreciate life and gift that is surrounds us.
