I haven't sent my newsletter for a few months, I couldn't bring myself to admit that doing workshops in person during this crazy covid crisis isn't practical. And it still isn't very feasible but I'm looking forward to next year and hopefully the vaccines will eradicate this horrible virus. I'm crushed that I can't hold my workshop in Chile next week and see the total solar eclipse. I scouted the area two years ago and really looked forward to sharing it with others. Total solar eclipses are something that have an almost mystical effect on me but I'll survive missing one. I had hoped to be able to go to Iceland in February but that too has been cancelled. I postponed a planned March trip to Vietnam until 2022 and cancelled two Cuba trips for early in the year. But in the big picture those things really don't matter. We'll get rolling with the workshops and trips next year.
I have several family members and friends struggling with their physical and mental health. Even though they probably don't realize it, they are a source of strength for me and many others. If they can get through it, so can the rest of us. 2020 has pretty much been a sucky year but I really like to think that it will make 2021 feel so much better. It is like the rainy days of April that are needed to make us enjoy the flowers of May all that much more. |

New gallery in Woodstock, VT Making the decision to open a gallery in Woodstock with partners Ron Lake and Bob Wagner sounded crazy at first but turned out to be brilliant. The gallery is beating our expectations and has been a lot of fun. We took over a gallery space that closed in March in the oldest building in town and right in the heart of everything. It is a prime corner location with lots of foot traffic. We spruced it up quite a bit and the gallery has the same feel as our photography, nice and clean and welcoming. You can visit the gallery's website at https://FocusVermont.com. I still have the gallery in Bedminster, NJ, and fellow photographer and friend Nat Clymer is running things there. |

Looking forward to the snow I've been in Vermont since March and love the beauty all around me. My favorite time here is when the ground is covered with snow and everything is pristine. A deep blanket of snow makes everything look so soft and minimal. One of my favorite photos from last winter is a simple three-element photo of a white house, birch tree and snow arching down a hill. Getting out into the cold weather takes more effort but it has huge payoffs. Like my mother always said, "If you're cold you're not working hard enough." With proper planning making photos in winter can reap huge rewards. I'm still planning on holding my Vermont Winter Wonderland Workshop Jan. 22-24 if travel to here is permitted by then. We'll be taking every precaution and meeting at my photo gallery rather than my usual meeting place at my house to assure everyone has room to be physically distanced. |
| | Peru, Iceland, Acadia still a go next yearWhile almost everything got cancelled since March this year, I'm still planning some exciting travel photography workshops next year. Photographing Peru and Machu Picchu is something every photographer should consider. We have one of Peru's top guides taking us to famous and out of the way places. It will be one of those never forget trips.
Iceland is one those places I can't visit enough. The summer landscape is phenomenal and it is so easy to get around. I've been there six times in the last three years so I know some great spots that you don't get to photograph on larger commercial tours. It will be in August and exact dates will be announced soon. And Acadia National Park in Maine is hard to beat. We'll go June 2-6, when the bright spring colors are still around and the crowds haven't arrived yet. And hopefully I can sneak in a Cuba trip, I'm still working on that trip. |
| | Fall foliage in Vermont October sounds like a long time from now and you really have to think covid will be under control by then. I did limited-size workshops this fall and the colors came through for us as usual. Autumn in Vermont is always spectacular and I go to places where others don't, like the scene above. The 2021 workshop is Oct. 4-8 in Woodstock, VT. |
